Obituary of John Ganick

John Ganick, 77, of Lake Worth, Florida, passed away peacefully in his home in Denver on March 19th. He was the son of the late Saul and Adele Ganick of Boston. He leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Barbara; son Andrew, his wife Kristin and their daughter Tessa of Denver, Colorado; son David, his wife Monica and their children Gavin, Adele and Maxine of Denver, Colorado; sister Dorothy of Magnolia, Massachusetts; sister-in-law Sheila and her husband Steve, of Fairfield, Connecticut; and many cousins who he loved. John was born in Boston, where he attended Boston Latin School and Harvard. He continued to support both schools as an active alumnus throughout his life, including as a Trustee of the Boston Latin School Association. He later graduated from Boston College Law School and went on to practice law for more than 40 years. He spent two years as a Navy JAG lawyer, and then became the first corporate attorney for Data General, a position that allowed him to travel the world. John continued to travel extensively later in life with Barbara. One of their last trips abroad was to India for the wedding of the daughter of Naren and Poonam Patni, a friend and colleague with whom John worked throughout his entire legal career. He spent 15 years practicing as part of the Vacovec, Mayotte & Singer law firm, where he also made incredible friends. John wasn’t one to sit still for long, and was physically active throughout his life. He loved running road races (and completed two Boston Marathons), playing sports with and coaching his children, scuba diving and playing golf whenever possible (although it’s possible that golfing was just an excuse to constantly buy new clubs or stroll around the golf course collecting balls that had been lost in the woods). He had the heart of an artist, always teaching himself how to create beautiful things; the homes of his family are filled with his stained glass and art projects. John inherited a love of music from his mother and was a talented singer, belting out tunes for anyone willing to listen and performing in numerous plays throughout his life. He had a tremendous appreciation for the ocean, and spent much of his life on the beach in Magnolia and Mashpee, Massachusetts. John was funny, loyal and generous. His many lifelong friendships, enduring marriage and loving relationships with his children and grandchildren are testaments to his sterling character and genuine heart. He improved the lives of all who were lucky enough to know him. Mourners are welcome to send condolences via the online guest book at Legacy.com. John’s funeral will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday, March 22nd at Feldman Mortuary in Denver, Colorado, and a celebration of his life will also be held in the Boston area on May 7th, location to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed to the John & Barbara Ganick Music Fund at Boston Latin School, https://6992.thankyou4caring.org/.
