Obituary of Yvonne Frey Oppenheimer
Yvonne Frey Oppenheimer of Denver, Colorado died on July 5, 2025 at age 82. Yvonne was previously of Wyomissing, PA where she had resided in the Greater Reading Area since 1985.
She was the wife of D. Robert Oppenheimer, with whom she celebrated over 63 years of marriage.
Yvonne was born in Columbus, Ohio on November 30, 1942. From the age of 7, she was raised in Miami, FL, the daughter of the late Richard H. Frey (Pittsburgh, PA) and Adelaide E. (Gauntner) Frey (Altoona, PA).
Mrs. Oppenheimer had been employed by The World Bank, Washington D.C. as an administrator from 1982 to 1985 for the South Asia – Bangladesh Country Programs Division. From 1995 until its closing in 2001, she served as Director of Social Work Services and later Director of Development, for Rainbow Home of Berks County, a personal care home for persons living with HIV/AIDS. She was last employed as a Consulting Associate for Capital Venture, Reading, PA, specializing in nonprofit fundraising and board development training, retiring in 2012 to do volunteer and pro-bono work in the local Berks County nonprofit community.
She graduated magna cum Laude in 1995 from Alvernia University, Reading, PA with a BA in Psychology and Communications, and in 2001 was awarded an MBA specific to nonprofit management and economic community development.
As a community volunteer, Mrs. Oppenheimer served on numerous boards and committees for local nonprofit organizations, among them Alvernia University, Executive Alumni Board, Berks County Community Foundation Diversity Alliance Fund, Centro Hispano Daniel Torres, Reading Area Community College Foundation, Reading Symphony Orchestra, Goggle Works Arts Center, JCC of Reading, Berks Equine Council, Greater Reading Mental Health Alliance, the Eastern PA Chapter of Parents, Friends and Family of Lesbians and Gays, Planned Parenthood of NE PA and Prospectus Berco. She was also an active member of the professional trade organization, The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP); a former board member of the AFP Eastern PA Chapter and one of the co-founders of AFP Berks Regional Chapter. Mrs. Oppenheimer was a recipient of the 2012 Take The Lead Award from the Girl Scouts of Berks County.
In addition, Mrs. Oppenheimer served as president of the Jewish Federation of Reading from 1997 to 2001.
She was a former member of the Bellwood Fox Hunt Club, the Kimberton Fox Hunt Club of Chester County, PA and the Chester County Foxhunters Association.
In addition to her husband Robert, Yvonne is survived by two sons, Richard (and Elaine) of Denver, CO and Karl of Kent, CT; 3 grandchildren, a granddaughter Hannah Hearth (and Caleb Hearth) of Denver, CO and two grandsons Andrew (and Susan) of Naperville, IL and Bryan of Denver, CO, a step-granddaughter September Stahly (and Michael Stahly) of Mt. Rainier, MD, and a step-grandson, Ryan Mooney of Baltimore, MD. In addition, she is survived by 6 great-grandchildren: Annie, Ellie, Henry, Ariadne, Oliver and James.
She was pre-deceased by three brothers, Gerard R. Frey, Donald E. Frey, and David W. Frey and a daughter-in-law, Megan B. Oppenheimer.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday July 13, 2025, at 1:00 PM, at Feldman Mortuary & Memorial; 1673 York Street, Denver, 80206 (303.322.7764). Inurnment in Smithfield East End Cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA.
The memorial service will be livestreamed to the Feldman Morutary & Memorial YouTube Channel.
