Obituary of Joseph Maurice Kelso

Lt.Col.(Ret.) Joseph M. Kelso, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025, in the comfort of his favorite chair with his daughters at his side.

Born January 2, 1932, in Laredo, Missouri, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 Years Francine. Joe was a loving father to Rachel (Eric Reitan) and Victoria (Ryan Cunningham), and a cherished grandfather to Kari (Austin Powell), Bret Reitan, Allie (Britt Cunningham), and Lauren Cunningham. He was also a very proud great-grandpere to Warren and Wyatt Powell and loving brother to Marilyn Chipps.

Joe received his bachelors degree in economics from the University of Missouri and treasured those years of school, especially his memories of working at and dating the girls at neighboring Stephen’s College.

A career officer in the United States Air Force, Lt.Col. Kelso served with distinction as a pilot and Air Attaché, with tours in England, the Belgian Congo, Denver, Vietnam, Laos, and the Ivory Coast, to name a few. It was during his tour in England that he met and married his “beautiful French wife, Francine.”

Following his military service, he enjoyed a second career with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, where he worked for 40 years and formed many lasting friendships.

Joe was passionate about flying, the symphony, opera, and theatre, and was one of the proud founding members of the Denver Toastmasters.  Even at 93, having seen so much of the world, he still dreamed of seeing Chile and exploring Alaska, the last two places on his bucket list.  Known for his quick smile, sense of humor, gift of gab, and willingness to join in on any fun, he was most devoted to his family, who will miss him dearly.

A service with military honors will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
