I guess I'm one of the old-timers now, among the few who knew Lee as a "West Side Girl" over on Quittman Street AND as a radiant, funny, wise presence at the various family gatherings, happy or otherwise, where I would see her once we were both adults. "Both adults" because, when I knew her as a West Sider, she and her sisters Simi and Gail were definitely my dad's cool cousins, which of course meant that I was in child-like awe of them. No surprise that she and Burt loved Elvis: I see Lee taking me to an Elvis movie back in the day. That's how long ago... But the thing about Lee is: she stayed cool, even as she became more and more awesome: a joyful, joy-giving person who had a fabulous life and touch so many people and will very much be missed. I'm so grateful to have known her, on both sides of town.

Lee always presented herself as so gracious and welcoming when Steve and I would see her at Temple. She certainly carried herself with a quiet elegance.
