Obituary of Jane Cohen

Jane Cohen, a long time Denver resident, passed away peacefully on October 16th.

On December 25, 1938, Arthur and Frances Bergmann welcomed their daughter Jane Ann in Kansas City. After little sister Mary was born, the family moved to Buffalo, NY where Jane graduated from Bennett High School in 1956.

Drawn to her maternal family’s  New Orleans roots, Jane attended Sophie Newcomb College at Tulane University following the legacy of both her mother and grandparents.  Despite being primarily raised in the northeast, Jane considered herself a southern gal, and she valued southern tradition, loved The Preservation Jazz Band, and actively sought out an authentic bowl of gumbo in Denver for years.

Jane met Richard Samuel Cohen, a handsome medical resident from Denver, at an Alpha Epsilon Phi mixer. and they married  shortly after her graduation in August 1960. With toddler twins, Alison and Robert, in tow, they moved to Denver, where their youngest child , Lisa was born in 1966. Jane easily took on the role of active young wife by serving on several boards and philanthropic endeavors related to her husband’s medical career.

Highly intelligent and always up to date on current events, Jane took pride in her work as a licensed social worker and went on to hold several public facing positions through out her life. In addition, she was an avid sport’s fan, tirelessly cheering for local teams; and an outspoken political activist, working on several political campaigns.

She will be most remembered for her wicked sense of humor, her detailed storytelling, her frank, no-nonsense approach to most things, and her love for a good card game.

Jane was preceeded in death by her loving husband Richard Samuel Cohen, daughter Alison Williams, and daughter-in law Noel Cohen. She is survived by her sister Mary Weiss, children Robert Cohen and Lisa Escalante (Greg Burnside); and grandchildren Alana (Jack Bloomfield), Ali, and Anika Escalante and Evan Cohen.
