Obituary of Allen Freedberg
Allen Freedberg, 93, Denver; Husband of the late Barbara (née Zinn) Freedberg; Father of Brad (Lisa) Freedberg, Dana (Roger) Lorenze, WA, and Julie (Frank) Orr; Brother of the late Don (the late Virginia) Freedberg, the late Ellen Brown, and the late Benjamin Freedberg; Brother in law of Diane Sue Freedberg; Grandfather of Maia, Gabriel, and Aviva Freedberg, Maxwell Lorenze, and Hunter and Everett Orr.
Born in 1932, Allen was a Denver native and graduate of Denver North High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served as an officer in the military with honors bestowed on him for his service during the Korean War aboard medical care vessels in the Sea of Japan. He returned to Colorado to study at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and graduated from the University of Denver with multiple degrees, including graduate degrees in science, psychology, and business.
Allen embarked on a career in education alongside the love of his life, his wife of 57 years and of blessed memory, Barbara. Together, they raised three children - Bradley, Dana, and Julie. He and Barbara enjoyed traveling, cooking, and socializing with friends. They were early members and one of the founding families of Temple Sinai. In the mid-seventies, he started, with a fellow educator, what became the second-largest turf and grass farm in Colorado, called ScienTurfic Sod Farm.
Allen was entrepreneurial with other business ventures, and had some great success and some setbacks, and he was always resilient. He entered commercial real estate practice, specializing in undeveloped property and farmland, making incredible relationships and friendships along the way. He was a real estate fellow at the University of Denver, and remained active in his career with Unique Properties well into his late eighties, serving as an inspiration to his colleagues and family.
Throughout his life, Allen overcame many health challenges—exhibiting and illustrating strength, fortitude, and a commitment to life. A lifelong learner, he loved reading and remained a curious intellectual until the day he passed. He lived 93 years—a life well lived. Allen will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
