Obituary of Lizzi Berger

Mrs. Lizzi (Salzman) Berger passed away after a life that spanned nearly a century of unwavering faith in G-D, profound history, resilience, and having merited to see four generations.

She was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1927, where she enjoyed a happy and vibrant childhood. That life was tragically disrupted in 1938 during Kristallnacht, when the horrors of Nazi persecution reached her home. With resilience and Divine providence, she and her parents escaped and found refuge in Shanghai, China, where they endured the hardships of the Shanghai Ghetto during the Holocaust. Despite extreme poverty and uncertainty, B'H her family survived.

In Shanghai, she met her future husband, Yechiel (Julius) Berger, who was studying in the Mirrer Yeshivah. They were married by Rabbi Ashkenazi, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in Torah and shared purpose.

Following the war, in 1946, they immigrated to the United States. In 1950, they settled in Denver, Colorado, where Mrs. Berger built a warm and devoted Torah home. She was a dedicated wife and mother, raising four children with deep values of faith, family, and community.

Mrs. Berger was actively involved in numerous local institutions and charitable organizations, including Hillel Academy, Yeshivas Toras Chaim, Beth Jacob HS of Denver, Zera Abraham, and Zera Israel. Her quiet strength and commitment left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

In 2001, she and her husband retired to Miami, Florida. After the passing of her beloved husband in 2013, she continued to live a life surrounded by the love of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, who were her greatest pride and joy.

She is survived by her devoted sons, Dr. Israel Berger and his wife Minna, and R. Mordechai Berger and his wife Debbie, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who carry forward her legacy.

Her life was a testament to faith in G-D, perseverance, and unwavering dedication to family and Torah. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
