Obituary of Edward Pluss

Edward “Eddie” Pluss, a cherished husband, father, and friend, and a devoted federal public defender, passed away at home on Friday, May 1 surrounded by his family.  A fifth-generation Coloradan, Eddie was a visible and beloved member of the Denver community.  Eddie leaves an enduring legacy measured by his commitment to public service and depth of his personal relationships.  As a federal public defender he gave a voice to those that society had forgotten or had theirs taken away, profoundly affecting an immeasurable number of lives throughout his career.  He was equally committed to those around him, holding strong relationships with an expansive and diverse group of friends and family with whom he loved running, golfing, attending games and concerts, traveling, entertaining, and sharing great meals at home and around town.

The youngest of three brothers, Eddie was born to Norman and Barbara Pluss and attended George Washington High School.  He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and law degree from the University of Denver.  Eddie met his wife, Janis, in 1982 at a public defender’s holiday party cutting lemons and limes together.  They were married for over forty wonderful years, and as devoted public servants they shared a passion for giving back and community engagement, whether it was hosting the Stanley British Primary auction, organizing travel lacrosse trips, or coaching mock trial at Kent Denver.  One of his and Janis’ greatest joys in life was raising their son Max together.  Eddie loved his family dearly.

Those who knew Eddie described him as kind, warm, even, generous, practical, funny, and honest (sometimes to a fault) — a moral compass and close confidant, but always up for a good time.  His wisdom, counsel, companionship, and one-liners will be dearly missed.  He cherished all of the wonderful memories and important milestones he celebrated with those around him.

Eddie faced his rare illness, Multi-System Atrophy (MSA), with courage and dignity, and leaves behind  his wife Janis Pluss, their son Max (Laura Touysinhthiphonexay) Pluss, and a wide circle of friends, family, colleagues, and extended family who will carry forward his ethos of generosity and good humor.
