Obituary of Eugene Weisberg

On Thursday January 22nd, the Weisberg family of Denver, Colorado lost their wonderful patriarch. He was a man who lived an extraordinary life. Eugene J. Weisberg died in the comfort of his home in Rancho Mirage, California after a brief illness. Not only was Gene an accomplished businessman, athlete and leader he always made his family his most important priority. Gene was an adoring companion to his wife of 71 years Beth Frankel Weisberg, and was the most loving and devoted father to his four children Jim, Jody, Tom and Buzz. Gene was born and raised in Longmont Colorado and was the third son of Selma and Joseph Weisberg. Gene attended the University of Colorado before transferring to the University Of Pennsylvania Wharton School Of Business where he was also a basketball star. After a short stint in the clothing business with the Lazarus Company in Ohio, Gene enlisted in the United State Army. He served as captain in the Army until the end of the war in 1945. Gene then returned to Denver to work for his father-in-law, Henry Frankel, at Frankel Carbon and Ribbon. Gene’s successful and productive career at Frankel Manufacturing spanned 40 years, leading the modern innovation of the ribbon industry. Gene’s love for Denver and the Jewish community was exemplified in his hard work and commitment to various causes. He served on numerous boards including The Allied Jewish Federation, Rose Hospital and Temple Emanuel. He was also President of the Jewish Community Center, Green Gables County Club, and the Town Club. Gene Weisberg was an outstanding athlete. He was and avid snow and water skier, a champion tennis player, and a competitive golfer. In spite of his numerous athletic injuries, nothing seemed to slow Gene down. He found a way to compete every day of his life, even if it meant beating his old cronies at the bridge table. Gene had a passion second to none for the Colorado Buffaloes, where he was the longest season ticket holder and a scholarship donor. However, his true love was for the outdoors and it inspired him to become a world-class fly fisherman where he was well known for his dedication and enthusiasm for the sport. Gene was a remarkable man with a giant personality and charisma. He attracted celebrities and athletes on every social scene and was a very popular figure throughout the years at the Tamarisk County Club in Rancho Mirage, California. He served as president of Tamarisk CC and chaired the Bob Hope Celebrity Golf Tournament. Gene shared his love of travel and adventure with his family and close friends. Countless weekends were spent on the ski slopes of Colorado. He fished throughout the world and especially enjoyed his times in Colorado, Idaho and Alaska. Along with his wife Beth, and his sister-in-law Peggy, the last special years of his life were also spent with the love and care of Victor, who was not only his helper, but his companion and close friend. He was the perfect husband for his adorable Beth, and his incredible legend and spirit will be carried on by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Burial will be at Temple Emanuel Cemetery at Fairmount. Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of your choice.
