Obituary of Ernest Hamburger

Hamburger, Ernest MD Capt. USPHS (Retired) 1933-2015 He was born in Germany the only child of Max and Johanna Hamburger at the onset of the Nazi reign. Persecution led his parents to flee to the USA near the end of 1938. After a year in a NYC orphanage, his parents made enough to afford a small apartment in the Bronx where he was raised and went through the public school system. He became a US Citizen in 1944. He graduated from City College of New York with a B. Sc, and from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland (MD). He interned in Spokane Washington. He then joined the U.S. Public Health Service and worked at a variety of locations for 22+ years. He was part of the original cadre of NIMH’s Mental Health Career Development Psychiatrists. In addition to his clinical practice, he did research on the biochemistry of wound healing, drug abuse and its treatments, and community mental health treatment programs. He was especially proud to be part of the Community Mental Health Development and initiation movement. After his retirement from active duty he delivered psychiatric patient care at metro Denver Community Mental Health Centers for many years. His parents predeceased him. Janet Hamburger was his first wife of 22 years, and he had two sons Scot (Massachusetts) and Paul (NYC), and 5 grandsons. He married Cheryl Beatty in 1980 and had two daughters Johanna and Marjorie. All his children and grandchildren survive him. A brief graveside service will be held at The Fort Logan National Cemetery at 11:15 am on Wednesday, Sept. 9th. Donations will be accepted for AISH Denver’s Discretionary Fund at 9550 E. Belleview Ave. Greenwood Village, CO 80111.
