Obituary of Irwin Horwitz

Irwin Joseph Horwitz of Denver died February 13th shortly after his 89th birthday. He was a Real Estate Developer, lifelong world traveler, passionate lover of life and a real character. He was married to the late Greta Lou Horwitz and brother to the late Jackie Levin; father of Michael (Debra) Horwitz and Lori (Terry) Nicholson; grandfather to Kayden and Kim Horwitz; he is also survived by his sister-in-law, Janet Lozow and brother-in law, Lawrence Atler, their spouses and children. His extended family was a part of his every day ritual with "good morning" calls to his kids and loved ones. He remained intimate and loyal to lifelong friends, reaching back to his boyhood with pals like Harold Cohen and Fred Davine. He enjoyed weekly "alta cocker" dinners and monthly lunches with his guy pals and fellow dreamers. He was equally friendly with valets, drivers and laborers as he was maître di's and real estate developers. No matter where he went in the world he made friends. Born February 11, 1927 to Molly and Sam Horwitz, he married Greta Lou Atler on September 10, 1950 in Denver. Along with his successful career in Real Estate the two of them found time to sail the Caribbean, year after year, in a small sloop; enjoy many winters in their home in Manzanillo, Mexico; and travel the world. Greta Horwitz died in 1996 and a part of his heart went missing. A couple years later, he met Sondra Williams who became his companion for worldwide travel, restaurant exploration, lively political discussions and enjoyment of all things cultural. They fell in love with each other and this way of life. Together they sought the most joy out of every day. Their spirit of adventure continued until the end: as avid Broncos fans, they traveled to San Francisco last week to watch the Super bowl. The day after returning to Denver he suffered a cardiac arrest. Never awakening from coma, he died peacefully in the presence of loved ones. Memorial Service will be Thursday, 2:00PM, at Temple Emanuel (51 Grape Street, Denver). Contributions in Irwin's memory can be made to Warren Village (1323 Gilpin St, Denver, 80218).
