Bernie---Simply the BEST.
I gained much over the years from my association with this 'Renaissance Man'. I always treasured the conversations in his office, where Bernie had something intelligent and meaningful to say about any topic. He defined the word 'mensch'.
Each person that I speak to at the dental school about Bernie only has rave reviews to share. He loved teaching there and it showed. Fortunate that he was able to do what he loved right up until he couldn't.
Bernie had a wonderful attitude even in trying times. Shortly after his initial successful treatment, he said to me, "Terri--I've never met anyone who wasn't terminal".
And just 2 weeks ago when we spoke, that same sense of humor was still apparent when I asked him how he was feeling and he said, "Terri--if you have a choice between this and a hangnail--take the hangnail". I hope to carry his positive attitude and spirit with me.
I sure miss him already. The world is diminished by his loss. My sincerest condolences to his fabulous family that he was so proud of and so close to. He leaves a shining legacy.

Bernie was one of the first faculty members to welcome me to campus and invite me to teach within his course in the School of Dentistry. I loved working with him because he was brilliant, funny, and loved teaching so much. I will miss him, bad jokes and all. He was so proud of his family and regaled me with tales of the bicycle trips and other adventures. Thank you for sharing him with us. One of the good guys is gone and my world will be poorer without him in it.

I will miss you Bernie! You were so much fun to work with, and so supportive and friendly to those of us when we were new to the University. You always strove to get folks to collaborate and work together. And your humor kept us laughing all the time. Your family will be in my thoughts...

Thank you Bernie for all the special memories of the many wonderful bicycle rides we did together. The greatest adventure of my life was our ride from Denver to Seattle about 15 years ago. You were the perfect companion. We will never forget you.You will be sorely missed.
To the family go our heartfelt condolences. May you be comforted by the memories of an exceptional man with whom you have shared so much.

With the hope that you will find comfort in fond memories, please know that others share your sorrow and are thinking of you at this sad time. "Mr. Bernie" was my respected colleague during our tenure on the Denver Council of the SCFD and we shared many discussions where I was privileged to learn from his experiences...as well as laugh at his terrible puns.
He will be missed. My condolences to you and your family for your loss.
With sympathy .... Harriet R. Hogue
