Obituary of Devera Thorn

Devera Mellman Thorn died peacefully in her sleep Saturday at age 82, surrounded by her loving family. Devera was born in Denver on Oct. 11, 1933 to Isaac and Estelle Mellman. She attended East High School and met her future husband, Bernard H. Thorn, when she was 17 and he was 20 and stationed at Lowry Air Force Base. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage. She attended the University of Colorado for 1 year before marrying Bernard and finished her studies later at the University of Denver, majoring in elementary education. She was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother, who took great pride in creating beauty in her home and its surroundings. She also taught sewing at Emily Griffith Opportunity School and formed her own company, Devera Designs, making and selling gift items. She and Bernard traveled all over the world, including cities in Europe, Africa, South America and the Middle and Far East. She fought valiantly for 26 years against the increasing challenges of Parkinson’s Disease. Survivors include her husband, Bernard; two daughters, Nancy Thorn and Patti Thorn (Harold Dubinski); granddaughter Erin Dubinski; grandson Sam Dubinski; brother Gerald Mellman. She was preceeded in death by daughter Vicki Thorn. Contributions can be made to the Parkinson’s Association of the Rockies. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Temple Sinai, 3509 S. Glencoe St., Denver, CO 80237
