The Dash
"I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on his tombstone,
from the beginning to the end.
He noticed that first came the date of birth
and spoke of that date with tears,
But what he said that mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
that he spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved him
know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not what we own,
the cars, the house, the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real
And always try to understand
the way that other people feel.
And be less quick to anger
and show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect
and more often wear a smile,
Remembering that this special dash
might only last awhile.
So when your eulogy is being read
with your life's actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent your dash?"

This was the Gary we new, this was the Gary we loved.
"Perhaps they are not the stars
But rather openings in heaven
Where the love of our lost ones
Shines down to let us know
They are with us."
"And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make."

I want to extend my deepest sympathy on your loss. Gary fought a courageous and long battle against a deadly enemy. I am glad he lived as long as he did with what he had to contend with. I know he will be missed.
I am unable to attend the service today, but please know my thoughts are with you.
Sincerely,
Roberta

Dear Milzer family....
It is with much sadness that I learned of Gary's passing on Saturday. We have known each other as high school friends, medical school buddies and as having experienced some of life's challenges in similar fashions. I have always admired and liked Gary, and I will cherish memories of him and of our times together.
Please accept my deepest condolences on his loss for all of you. I wish you peace of mind in knowing that his legacy lives on and that through your children and grandchildren, his memory will be perpetuated.
With warmest thoughts and prayers,
Robb Kahn
