Dear Dr. Kessler now in Heaven, I love you, my family loves you, and we owe you a debt of eternal gratitude. To the most wonderful, caring, thorough, sweet, and humble man who literally touched my heart, stopped my heart, so skillfully repaired it, then breathed life back into me, you will forever live in my heart. I was so lucky and blessed to have had a surgeon of your caliber operate one me (Jan 2013). I am so happy I got to kiss those amazing hands of yours that helped me see many more birthdays and helped me see my unborn baby girl be born and nap on my chest and listen to my heartbeat. I will show her your picture some day and tell her your story and ask her to remember you and pray for you. My world is sadder without you in it. I will pray for your soul every day for the rest of the life you restored for me.
To his family, please be consoled with the knowledge of how many lives your wonderful Randy has conscientiously and quietly touched and saved during his life, with no fanfare.
May his memory be eternal. May his soul and his body find eternal rest. Love. Love. Love.

Dr. Kessler is also survived by the many people who he saved through his thoughtful and expert approach to cardiothorasic surgery. My husband was one of the many that Dr. Kessler saved. We were on vacation visiting family in Boulder in Nov. 2012 when my husband came into the ER with endocarditis on his aortic valve. Between waiting for the infection on the valve to subside and the open heart surgery, my 43 year old husband had a massive stroke. I remember when Dr. Kessler consulted with me and my family and how gentle, honest, and humble he was about the risks involved in replacing the valve post stroke. At that moment, I couldn't think of anyone I would trust more than Dr. Kessler to handle tis delicate surgery. A few days later, Dr. Kessler proceeded to remove the artificial valve which was no longer functional and by some amazing luck he was able to secure a human valve from a 26 year old man to replace my husbands badly infected bovine valve. The surgery took 8 hours and at the end of the day, my husband was alive because of Dr. Kessler. Four years later, my husband still suffers from the effects of the stroke, but he is alive and able to enjoy his life and watch his two children grow up. He owes this all to Dr. Kessler. We are so saddened to hear of his death. The world was surely a better place with him here. RIP Dr. Kessler. Sincerely,
Jamie, Tina, Jessica, and Casey Phillips

We had our five month old son only a few weeks after his aarrival from overseas before he had to have open heart surgery. Having lost his brother to surgery a year earlier, my husband and I were more than nervous. Our son breezed through the surgery, and in fact became the second child in the history of UNMH to be discharged straight from the PICU to home, partially because of an outbreak of chicken pox, and partially because, as Dr. Kessler said, "His crying is bothering all of the sick babies." What a wonderful man you were, Dr. Randy Kessler. Yours was a life well lived, and we are thankful to have had some time with you. To his family, what a wonderful man he was - but you already know that. Our thoughts and prayers to you all.

When I walked in to Randy's office in Boulder in October of 2013 to meet my surgeon, he was looking at my echo on his monitor. He had a little smile on his lips as he turned to meet me and my wife Page.
He said- (smiling) "This is one of the worst mitral valve conditions I've seen in my career."
Me- (eyebrows raised) "Does this effect your level of confidence?"
Him- (broader smile) "Ha, I can't wait to work on it!!"
When we left 30 minutes later, Page and I felt confident, relieved, and so cared for by this man we had just met. We scheduled for minimally invasive surgery 3 weeks later, and after 7 hours, he and Mernoosh and Nelson came out to my awaiting friends and family in the cardiac waiting area smiling and high fiving each other.
I LOVE RANDY KESSLER. I know I am not alone. Not only did he save my life, but he sat, talked and was vulnerable with me for 45 minutes when I had a melt down while on the unit and wanted to give up. When he came on the unit for rounds, we were to have walked, eaten and be sitting in the chair with the window shade open at 6 AM sharp. I knew he arrived when the nurses station went silent. I'd look up and he was standing in my doorway again with his gentle and engaging smile. During my rehab I would stop at his office on my way upstairs to say hello. He was kind and reassuring every time, with a twinkle in his eye, saying "keep stopping by."
I only knew him in this context. To this day I think about how lucky I was to have him so intimately involved in my physical and psychological self. My wife and two sons Max and Will
feel it too. I only can imagine how much love has been shared in his family.
I will celebrate and hold him in my heart as long as I live. Oh how I wish I could have done for him what he did for me.

Dr. Kessler saved my sons life in October of 2000 when he repaired his mitral valve. Then, in February of 2013, he saved my wife's life by replacing her defective mitral valve. Dr. Kessler was such a blessing to my family.

Our deepest condolences go out to Randy's family. We only knew him from his time at Clermont Park, where he was a pal with my 104-year-old dad, Nick. Randy couldn't speak very clearly and Dad couldn't hear, but somehow they connected. We will always remember his beautiful smile and twinkling eyes. Randy will live on in all our memories.

On January 19, 2011, Dr. Kessler performed my triple bypass procedure. Prior to the surgery, as you might expect, my wife and I had a lot of questions. He answered them all and convinced us that this was the correct procedure for my condition and that he was the best surgeon to perform it. He was correct on both counts. I have had no cardiac problems since then. Along with countless other cardiac patients who encountered this skilled surgeon, we probably owe our lives to him. I have thought of him often over the years and always on January 19. He was special to so many and will be missed. My condolences go out to his family.

We did not know Randy the brilliant surgeon. We knew Randy the kind and polite neighbor. Then we knew the man that although he worked around the clock, with each snow fall -before we were awake - shoveled our sidewalk as well as our elderly neighbor’s. We knew the man who when our little 6 year old went over to play with his wife and although she was out, welcomed him in and graciously let him plop down to watch him cook or read a book alongside Randy while Randy caught up on the Economist or the New Yorker. He probably would have welcomed some alone time after a long day and yet Randy always welcomed Aidan in. A fond memory Dawn and I always marvel at reveals a side of Randy not many knew. One sunny day in June as our son was readying to celebrate his 7th birthday, he asked Randy (who had just returned from rounds at the hospital), if he would help blow up a portion of the 100 water balloons he was readying for battle with his friends. Dawn came home a while later and there was Randy at the sink filling and tying water balloons. Randy was always kind and gracious. We also knew Randy the incredible athlete. Dawn and I would trudge up the mountain roads near our house in Boulder, I will never forget the day Randy rode past us effortlessly on his bike and just smiled. Here we were huffing and puffing and he just breezes by. We will always remember the kind-hearted man that we were lucky to live next to in Boulder where he just loved biking to work. We miss you and will always cherish our times together. Sending love to Dawn and David.
Love Sonja, Bulend and Aidan
