Obituary of Barry Stuart Engel
Devoted and loving husband and father, treasured son and brother, Barry Stuart Engel passed away at home on Friday, July 21st at the age of 63, following a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer. He is survived by Marsha, his wife of 38 years, his three beloved children, Natalie, Andrew and David, his mother, Eileen Jacobson, his four brothers, Michael Sellz (Rachel Joselson), Richard Engel (Trudie Olson), Rand Engel and Gregg Engel (Karen), and many nieces and nephews.
Born on June 19, 1954 in Los Angeles, California, Barry grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, attended Burke High School, and later graduated from University of Colorado, Boulder in 1976. He received his law degree from University of California, Hastings College of Law in 1979, and founded his own practice in Denver five years later. He quickly gained international prominence for pioneering the field of asset protection and integrated estate planning.
Barry was an accomplished musician and guitar player, who went by the moniker “Hound Dog Engel.” He spent much of his free time writing and recording original music in his home studio and performing in several classic rock bands in the Denver area.
Despite his Pancreatic Cancer diagnosis in early 2014, Barry’s signature sense of humor never wavered and he continued to live life on his terms; working full-time, traveling, collecting sports cars, and enjoying time with family and friends.
Barry was preceded in death by his adopted father Robert Engel, stepmother Renee Engel, stepfather Leonard Jacobson, birth father Norman Sellz, and his much loved Goldendoodle Roscoe.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at Temple Emanuel, 51 Grape Street, Denver 80220. Those wishing to honor Barry’s life are welcome to make a donation in his memory to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network: https://support.pancan.org/goto/barryengel http://support.pancan.org/goto/barryengel.
