Obituary of Susan Flaxer Zalkin
Susan Flaxer Zalkin passed away on July 25, 2018, after a valiant battle against lung cancer, with which she was diagnosed in April. Her family was by her side.
Susan was born on June 12, 1950, to the blissful union of Dr. Carl and Evelyn Flaxer, the day after Carl graduated from medical school at the University of Colorado.
Susan was the sister of Michael Flaxer (Sharlyn), Lisa Flaxer Ruda (Jacques), and the late Lori Flaxer Kamlet (Steve), all of Denver. Susan met Mark Zalkin in 1973, who proposed to her four days later, and they married that year.
Susan raised three children: Sara, David, and Mara. David married Jessica Miller Zalkin in 2006. While Susan’s children were the light of her life, her four grandchildren took center stage (Shmuel “Shmulie” Yekusial, Emunah Menucha, Avraham (“Avi”) Yehuda, and Esther Shana “Esti”). “Bubbie Camp” and sleepovers at Bubbie and Zayde’s home throughout the year were filled with joy. “Aunt Susie/Susina” was always a hit with her nieces and nephews as well.
Susan attended college in Boston and earned her Bachelor’s degree at Metro State. Later in life, she earned a Master’s degree in Social Work, with a focus on gerontology, from the University of Denver. Susan loved people of all ages and backgrounds, and was a superb communicator. Susan cultivated her relationships with family, including but not limited to her network of cousins across the country, and friends, who span the globe.
Susan loved nature (especially summer in Colorado); movies; travel; reading; shopping; and appreciated humor. Susan had a life-long love of learning, especially Jewish history and culture, textual study, and took pride in manifesting Jewish values. Her family and friends already miss her beyond words, and will forever cherish her kind spirit, patience, intelligence, and generosity.
