I only heard about Carol's death today. Carol was a dear friend during the years she lived in Palo Alto, raising Harrison, working in law, and caring for others. We spent many wonderful times with our children, hanging out at each other's homes, celebrating birthdays, sharing meals and ferrying the kids around. I met Carol just after we moved to Palo Alto in 2001 as she spotted me and my two daughters walking in the neighborhood. Harrison was half way between them in age and they all rounded each other out. One of my favorite memories is of the three children turning two old funky fake leather therapist rocking chairs from the 70s (that looked like automobile bucket seats) into slides by bracing them upside down against the couch. I was so happy to finally have a use for them and suspected we owed that to Harrison. Also, I fondly remember being at Carol's and Julius's house for dinners. Carol could put together a gourmet dinner with items from Trader Joe's. She was absolutely brilliant at finding the potential in things. She also loved all kinds of gadgets, especially funny little toys for the kids like a sticky man that stuck to the wall or flipped down the frig. Sometimes the adults would talk long after the meal while the kids watched Ghost Busters, Harrison's favorite. Carol was devoted to Harrison, delighting in his talents, and also seeing him as the whole person he is. She had a laser sharp intelligence and caring interest in others. She exemplified loving kindness. She felt things deeply and was there for you. We were both in the same woman's reading group for a number of years. Any time with her was incredibly special. Eventually she and Harrison started residing in Denver, more and more, but I still got to see her when she was in Palo Alto. She was passionate about her work, family and friends. I last spoke to Carol in Sept 2018 as I drove north on highway 5 from Los Angeles to Palo Alto. I had just visited Harrison in Venice Beach, after attending a party in L. A. I had not seen him for many years. He was doing well and I wanted to talk mom-to-mom as we had so often. I will always remember how wise Carol was, and how proud she was of her family. I had no idea it would be my last conversation with her. She had so much to give. May she rest in peace and live on in all of our memories. May Harrison thrive and carry her love for him always.
Deirdre Crommie, Palo Alto.

Carol,
It's been almost two months now since you left us. And I want you to know that you're not forgotten. I will always miss spending time with you when I return to my old adopted hometown of Denver.
You were my dear friend and I'm going to take my memories of the last time we had breakfast together at Duffy's and hold on to them forever.
Thank you for having been part of my life.
Love you,
Michael

I am so sorry for your loss, and unfortunately just heard about it today. As a Graland classmate, I remember her as a bright, athletic, and gifted person. I had only seen her a few times in the last several years, and I wish I could have been of some help to her. My thoughts are with her family.

The world has lost a lovely person I am so sorry that Carol is gone. I will cherish the memories that I have of her..
Her wedding to Julius was wonderful, Carol had a great soprano voice. She sang "Summer Time".. The band let Julius play a guitar with them. Sam Freeman stood and move closer. I believe he was delighted with it all and so were we.
Julius and Carol had a long struggle trying to have a child. Finally they had a baby boy, Harrison. I came to help out for a week. I remember Julius went to the drugstore to pick up a prescription. He said when he looked at the label Harrison Smith it hit him that this was a real person. He sent me a copy of the journal he kept for years of what Harrison did and said as a toddler.
I have precious memories of the family trips Carol planned that included me.
Joyce had gotten Harrison into Orgame designs. It was so much fun watching his skill at making animals and objects out of colored paper.
Those are the days I like to think about. I also like to think that Carol is with Sam and Joyce at rest and in peace.
Sincerely,
Carol's mother-in-law,
Helen Smith

From the chairman of law firm Morgan Lewis, where Carol worked for many years:
Dear Friends,
It is with great sorrow that I share with you that our friend and colleague, Carol Freeman, passed away on Friday. She was living in Denver, Colorado at the time of her death but remained in close contact with her good friends at Morgan Lewis.
Carol joined us in 2003 with many other colleagues from the Brobeck firm as a partner, and later as a consultant, in our Labor & Employment Group. Carol was encyclopedic in her knowledge of California employment law, and was a trusted advisor to our clients and also to the firm. She had a brilliant legal mind and delved into every issue until she had mastered it. She was also caring and compassionate, and our clients regularly depended on her not just for her legal analysis but for her judgment as well. As a result, Carol was beloved by the many clients who stayed with her even as they moved from company to company, often insisting on hiring Carol as their outside counsel. After advising someone on a tricky issue, she would follow up to make sure that everything had gone as well as could be hoped for. She was always thinking of others, and many clients regarded her as both an invaluable counselor and a friend.
A former commissioner for the California Fair Employment and Housing Commission, Carol received her BA from Columbia University and her JD from the University of San Francisco School of Law, cum Laude.
I met Carol in 2003 and have been privileged to have the benefit of her wisdom and guidance over the years. She was a truly gentle and good soul, and we were lucky to have her as part of our firm. She was loved by many and respected by all, and we will miss her.
... please keep Carol and her family, including her son Harrison, in your thoughts and prayers.
Jami
