Gil was my classmate at Columbia, my closest friend in medical school, and a wonderful human being. We first got to know each other seriously when we met at Penn Station in September, 1950 to take the train to St. Louis to attend the Washington University School of Medicine. He was one of the smartest guys in the class. We have stayed in touch over the years, and have stayed in each other’s homes in Paris and in Denver. An extraordinarily capable physician, surgeon and teacher, he had a wide range of interests and an inquiring mind. Everyone respected Gil. I will miss him tremendously. Our sincere condolences to Jane.

Gil and I were classmates at Columbia from 1946-1950, played basketball on the JV team there for 4 years and played freshman tennis together as well (Gil always beat me). I grew up in Hoboken NJ and Gil in West New York, NJ, so we saw each other over summers as well. In the Columbia Biology class my dogfish dissection was in tatters and Gil's looked like the text book pictures. He wanted to be a surgeon, and I knew he was destined to be an exceptionally skilled one. His grades were also at the top of our class. We kept in touch through the years. I was gratified to learn that his medical training at Washington U in St Louis and surgical post graduate training at Massachusetts General Hospital documented his outstanding intellect, judgment, caring, and talent. My deepest sympathies are with his family.

As a physician colleague at Rose Medical Center and a friend to Gil and Jane since the early 1980s, I have always regarded Gil as a community treasure and an inspirational physician, educator, father and husband. Trained in Boston with the top surgeons of his time, he never stopped learning, teaching and sharing his enthusiasm for healthcare.
For many years after he finished his surgical practice, he headed the Rose surgical complications conferences----i loved hearing how he analyzed surgical situations and how much respect he showed for differences in opinions. Curious by nature and possessing a great sense of humor, he was such a pleasure to share patient care and to discuss life and medicine. Gil never really retired----his mind remained so active in both attending classes and teaching at adult learning institutions. Gil and Jane invited Gwen and me to dinner on June 12 2018 at their beautiful new home. Here is a picture of Gil from that wonderful evening.

My deepest sympathy to Jane and family at this very sad time. I have many fond memories of Dr.Hermann. Working beside him at Rose had a “perk”....many hours of conversations! He shared his passions for excellence and learning. As I considered my continued career, he told me to “not be satisfied and seek new experiences”, over and over again. I will always thank him for this
kind mentoring,

Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of one of the finest physicians I have known in my lifetime. Gil Hermann was truly gifted as a surgeon, and his caring kindness was his greatest hallmark.
Dr. Hermann performed an appendectomy on me late on a Sunday night in 1963, and I was the recipient of both his diagnostic expertise and fine surgical skills as well as his warmth and gentle demeanor.
I was fortunate later in my life to have learned from him when I was a medical student at the CU Med School, and I spent time on a rotation with Gil at Rose Hospital. It was there that I learned from him that "in order to take care of a patient, one has to care for the patient as s person...." This lesson has endured to this day and i will always be grateful to Gil for sharing that wisdom with me.
I know that you will miss him greatly and that the memory of his smile and gentle caring ways will persist.
The world was a better place because of Gil Hermann.
With warm thoughts,
Robb Kahn, M.D.

Dear Jane and family,
So sorry to hear about the passing of Gil. What a kind, gentle and thoughtful person he was. Gil was always interested in what everyone else was doing. He was so unassuming, you would never know that he was one of Denver’s finest doctors.
Whenever there was a family health emergency, Gil was the first one my family would call. I’ll never forget when my younger sister, Toni, needed an emergency appendectomy in the middle of the night. The next morning in recovery, we noticed that Gil and his staff also gave one to Toni’s doll so she wouldn’t feel alone in the experience! He was a remarkable guy. Right now, he and Dad are catching up on old times! May his memory be a blessing to you and your family.
With love and sadness,
Matt & Ara Haligman

I am so sad to hear of Gil’s passing. For almost 50 years, I considered Gil a friend and colleague. He always was able to offer wise counsel or an encouraging word. Over the years I saw the light side and good humor and enjoyed the occasional social time with him and Jane. Gil was an insatiable student whether of medicine or some more obscure interest after retirement such as geology. He was a stalwart at Rose Medical Center and among its leaders. I’ll miss
My friend Gil.
