Don worked out early in the morning at Club Greenwood at the same time I did for many years, until a year or so ago. He always had a smile and a twinkle in his eye. It is not easy getting older and I am sure there were problems and loss, but he never let on, and was always just a joy to be around. My condolences to his family. Very sorry for your loss.

My husband and I knew Don through the one thing in his life that made him more crazy than anything else - golf! Our first golf lessons were at Green Gables in the summer of 1998 and our last "official" lesson was in August of 2018!! I still have the video from that day and if you slow it down and watch his swing at impact you can see that he smacked the hell out of it!!! Of course he immediately said "where did it go?" but it went right for the green - he was so pleased! I think golf possessed and tortured him, but he would hit some great shots on the range and it would make him so happy. In the past 4 or 5 years, we did fewer lessons but added occasional dinners to our relationship. Don, my Don and I would have the best conversations at California Pizza Kitchen, or Venice, or at a BBQ joint since he and my husband both loved brisket! Don always had the lean brisket and was sure to remind the staff on just how to prepare it and God forbid if they added garlic to anything! We always enjoyed listening to him tell us about the classes he was taking at DU and he loved to grade his instructors. Surprisingly he loved a class about making movies and shared that he fell asleep during one of them and fell out of his chair!!! He laughed and laughed about that and had us laughing right along with him. It was inspirational for us to see someone who clearly had a brilliant mind, but was willing to listen to different perspectives and be open to learning. Another topic he loved was politics - he was so smart and in-the-know about what was going on in the world. We will miss Don so much and will always cherish our time with him. May he rest in peace and be with Rose again.

Our condolences to John, Julie and all of the family. Don was a colleague, mentor and friend since my earliest days in Denver real estate. He taught me a great deal about the law, but more importantly about integrity and friendship. We used to go out on Saturday mornings to take photos and have breakfast. It would take him seemingly forever to set up a shot, while I snapped off a dozen of the same thing, hoping for one good one. He took his time to get it right, in all things. I miss those days and will miss him, his sense of humor and friendship always. George and Bonnie Chelwick

I learned a lot from Don over the years and I greatly admired his intelligence and high sense of integrity, as well as his wonderful sense of humor. My thoughts and prayers go out to Julie and John during this sad time. Don truly will be missed.

Don was a mentor to me starting in 1981 when I joined Isaacson Rosenbaum and we continued as colleagues and friends throughout the rest of his life. Don originally joined the law firm in 1968, when it was known as Rosenbaum, Goldberg, Rosenbaum and Miller. Although he left the firm and rejoined it several times, it was always to serve clients of the firm and his friends as a leading light in the commercial real estate business. In the mind of the many attorneys who worked with Isaacson Rosenbaum over the years, Don’s name is indelibly affiliated with the firm and its high reputation in the legal community. He was one of the brightest people I have ever known.Notwithstanding that he was known as a tough negotiator, who had the patience to negotiate each word of real estate documents (as they grew in size and complexity over the years), he also prided himself on developing personal friendly relationships with the lawyers and business people on the other side of the table. As others have mentioned, Don had a wry sense of humor, usually accompanied by a following chuckle, often taking aim at himself. Family was very important to Don and he took great pride in his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered.

Don was a work colleague of mine for 13 years. My favorite memories of Don are the jokes and funny stories we shared where we laughed so hard we would get tears in our eyes. He had a unique and wonderful sense of humor. He was also an excellent attorney who understood how to marry the business side with the legal side and protect the investors/company and still get the deal done. My condolences to John, Julie and the while family.

My sincere condolences to Don's family. I am truly sorry for our loss. Don and I were college roommates. We were friends and law partners for many years. I have so many memories of the times Ellen and I spent with Don and his family, and of the later years when Don faithfully attended (sitting in the front row) all of my OLLI classes over a 10 year period. He was a unique person, and always a pleasure to be with. I was lucky to have him as a friend and a significant part of my life for so many years. He had a wonderful sense of humor. I had to dig for it once in a while, but he was always high principled, caring and decent. Spieg was a fine lawyer, and a credit to the legal profession. I will miss him.

"Spieg" was a dear friend -- a friendship that lasted for 80 years -- through Steck; Gove; and East High; and for 6+ decades thereafter He shared his droll comments about the contemporary urban scene with a close group of his Denver buddies, when we met for our frequent lunches. His loyalty to us, his friends, was legendary. We'll all miss him greatly.
