Jeri and Mike,
I was just thinking of you mom, and did a search on the internet and learned the sad news. You may not remember me, but my brother and I lived diagonally across the intersection from your family in Lexington, MA. Our driveway was on Fiske Road and yours on Fairlawn Lane.
I was one of your mom's first private students. And she "hired" me with cookies to "test her Lesson Plans for her program in Winchester. Of course she was actually hired by my parents to teach me learning strategies to over-come the impacts of my Dyslexia. Neither your mom nor my parents let me know about my learning challenge, they simply provided me with the resources to be effective.
What your Mom, and your entire family did for me, was so special and has provided me with the foundation with which to be happily successful. I wish I had had an opportunity to thank her one more time. I still remember going to one of the first Bat Mitzvah's in Lexington for Geri, to be included was a treat!
All my love and best wishes to all!

I was a student of mrs. Gertz at Denver West High School....I remember her always baking goodies and bringing them to class.
She was a great teacher and always took the time to help us out.
I would often call her at home to say hi and kept in contact with her for years after I graduated.
I love you Mrs. Gertz ❤️

Thank you for your kind words, Chris, and for keeping mom in your heart all these years. She often spoke about you as her “star pupil”.
Much aloha to you and your family, Jeri

Wow, Fred…Frederick!
Mike and I remember you and your family very well!
What a moving message about your memories of ““working” with mom. And thank you for the gift of sharing them here with us.
We have such strong, fond memories of growing up on Fairlawn Lane, in our Sun Valley neighborhood.
Would love to hear about your current life in NH, and catch up about the several decades that have passed.

I met Eileen when I worked at Denver West High School in the 1970's and 80's. She was always a delight... she was funny and had wonderful stories. We shared a tennis interest and she shared stories of volunteering at the State Girls and Boys Tennis Finals. Eileen was passionate about her students, and they knew how much she cared for them and for their futures.
My husband, Phil, also knew Eileen as a fellow Special Education teacher at West High School. He, too, enjoyed working with her. We were so lucky to have known Eileen. She was a true treasure.

I remember Eileen very clearly, having worked with her for many years at West High School. She was one of the brightest, most personable teachers I have ever had the pleasure of woking with. She always had a smile for anyone who needed one.
I never saw her become angry, and she was always willing to go above and beyond what was expected of her in her teaching duties. Her students loved her and I could tell she loved them back. Rest in peace Eileen.

When I began volunteering at Porter Adventist Hospital, Eileen was one of the kind ladies who taught me how to handle being receptionist in the busy ICU/Surgical waiting room. That was twelve years ago. I have never forgotten Eileen's love of people and the way she connected with others. Her ease in every situation was with such grace and compassion to all she encountered. A donation to Alzheimer's Association has been made in her memory.

Eileen was unique. It is hard to comprehend how so much energy, wit, talent, and brilliance could be contained in such a tiny, adorable person. And somehow, she always seemed to have the perfect tan too!
My family and I have so many wonderful memories of times together. Eileen was known in our house as Tutu Tasha. And she had nicknames for my husband and son too. (Since you all know Eileen so well, you will understand why I can't print those nicknames here.) Once, when she was coming over for dinner, my husband decided to honor her with homemade knishes. But since we didn't have any potatoes, he made a whole wheat and vegetable concoction that became known as Chinese Knishes. Eileen, of course, loved it. We remember her coming to the Denver airport in the pre-TSA days to meet us at our arrival gate with bagels and lox when we had a layover in Denver on our way back home to Hawaii. She always brought cute, funny, and some times even useful gifts when she came to Hawaii. One time, she handed me a wad of gallon zip lock bags. I cracked up and gave her a hard time about it. So, of course, she brought me zip locks every time she came to visit after that.
And then there was the Christmas tree in the rain event. This is one of our favorite memories. We were in the process of building our house and only had half a roof. We put a scraggly Christmas tree in one corner. Eileen came to celebrate with us. And it poured and poured. The rain collected on the floor and slowly advanced towards the corner with the tree...and us. We ended up huddled in the corner, trapped by rain, laughing our heads off. Now how many other mothers do you know who would find that situation hilarious?
We miss Eileen. We love Eileen. We are so grateful to have had her in our lives.

Eileen was always a good sport. On a visit to Hilo (2015) Jeri, Eileen and I ventured up the Hamakua Coast to the Laupahoehoe Train Museum. I took a few photos as we staged a scene where we pretended the train was coming and Jeri was strapped to the tracks. (Jeri, a good sport like her mom laid on the tracks) . Eileen acted out panic and horror.
In the other photo Eileen is listening to Jeri on a life radio interview. The only place we could get good reception was to put the radio on the washer in the laundry room. She was a little confused as to where Jeri was and why I set her up in the laundry room, but she went along. Isn't she a doll?
Aloha Eileen. I think of you when I put used coffee grounds on the roses and see a certain canned good in my cupboard. "Manhattan Style Fish ____ with circular noodles". TRUST ME, distributors
Thanks Jeri and Mike for sharing your Mom. She makes me smile, even now..

A light as bright as the sunshine and a smile that lit up the room. Her warmth, intelligence, humor and compassion wrapped her in a glow where ever she went. I will always remember her visits to Hawai'i. Her joy at being with Jeri sparkled all the time. And.. her culinary treats were incredible and, yet, there she was looking as gorgeous as ever. I think her trick was that she baked and fed the world... but didn't absorb any of the calories. I will miss hearing more of your stories but I know that Jeri will continue to share them for a very long time. You will be deeply missed. To the Grand Dame of Colorado and the Gertz Family! We are all diminished by your loss. Your love and light were so large!!! Me Ke Aloha Pumehana, Jude

I've been thinking about why Eileen's jokes, her way of pulling your leg were so funny and SO effective. You would never imagine this elegant belle being so wonderfully devious! Her gags were always a delight and incredibly creative. She lived her life with such imagination, joy, and love. These beautiful qualities live on in Jeri and, I'm sure, in Mike, his girls, and all of her family. Also, did she ever have a written down recipe for that Drunken Pistachio Dream cake? Eileen, I will miss you.

Eileen was really one-of-a-kind! She was my birthday twin and I will always remember a long table down the center of Hilo Bay Cafe, lined with friends wearing funny hats, for our joint birthday party one year. She will be missed by me, along with the rest of you. So glad I got to know her.

Eileen Gertz is one of the most unforgettable people I've ever met. When I was ten years old, I was introduced to her and her husband Boris through my father, who worked with her husband Boris as a psychologist at the South Carolina State Hospital. I gasped when I first saw her because, as I told my father in private, "That woman looks like a movie star!" I got to know Eileen better when, soon after that, I began baby-sitting for Jeri and later Jeri and Mike, who I'm happy to see have inherited some pretty amazing characteristics, so we have Eileen (and Boris) to thank for that. Eileen is the only one I know personally who died of Covid-19, but every memory I have of her is life-affirming and life-enhancing.
I loved her as an artist-- the covers of playbills she created at the Lyric Theater and other places in Columbia. The charcoal drawings she did...
I loved her as a cook and baker--green rice with peanuts, blue mashed potatoes or sometimes ones made to look like a football if it was football season--cakes like the one I'm holding in the picture I'll try to remember to add, which shows a piano she made for a piano recital I was in.
I loved her as writer when she wrote new, funny words to old melodies of show tunes, a talent her daughter Jeri has also demonstrated (and Jeri can sing!).
I loved her as an employer, who raised my wages from 25 cents to 50 cents in the six years I baby-sat.
I loved her as a kind person, who helped boost the self-confidence of this baby-sitter from 0 to at least 5.
Eileen had a wicked and delicious sense of humor. She taught me the fun and satisfaction of shopping for second-hand and discounted merchandise--especially clothes but even food and stationery.
She brought so much color, joy, and beauty into the world! Just look at Jeri and Mike!
She certainly had the "star quality" I immediately recognized when I was a child of ten and first met her.
I'm grateful that I have been able to keep in touch with her extraordinary daughter Jeri over the years and see her grow from an adorable and bright little girl to a beautiful, powerful, witty woman, writer, performer., wife, and friend. May the blue angel always bring blessings to this family.
