Obituary of Joseph Resnick

Joseph Franklin Resnick was born in Brooklyn, NY right after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died, hence his middle name. His parents were Murray Resnick and Ethel Gerstenzang Resnick. He is a graduate of Brooklyn Tech and Pratt Institute where he was an Electrical Engineering major. He also acquired a master’s degree in Operations Research from Cornell University. This was important because in his first week at Cornell, he met Yvonne Kramer who he married one year later. Joe was working at Bell Labs in Holmdel New Jersey when he and Yvonne were married. After a few years he accepted a job with the U.S. Postal Service engineering division in the Washington, DC suburbs where he was involved in electronic mail, a precursor to email, at an early stage in the 1970s and 80s. Later he led different projects including the automation of mail via remote bar code reading. Joe was a devoted husband, for nearly 52 years, and father. His passions included being with family, playing bridge, following his beloved Washington Nationals baseball team and skiing. He took great pleasure that despite his illness, he was able to attend Game 7 of last year’s World Series won by the Nationals in Houston, Texas. His passion for skiing especially influenced his family. Nearly all vacations were spent on the ski slopes and both children eventually moved to Colorado. In 2011, when both he and Yvonne had been retired a few years, they moved from Fairfax, VA to Broomfield, CO to be closer to their children, grandchildren and skiing! Up until this last ski season he hit the slopes regularly every year. His kids and grandkids are all avid skiers, with two of his grandchildren on the U.S. Ski Team. Joe and Yvonne traveled extensively after retirement. They especially enjoyed trips to the Galapagos, China, Australia and throughout Europe. Just before being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, they had voyaged to Spain and Portugal. Joe died only 13 months after returning home. He leaves behind his wife Yvonne, son Eric and wife Sara, daughter Emily and husband Kenny McCarty. He has 5 grandchildren aged 20, 18, 16, 14 and 12 - Michael, Allie and Emma Resnick, and Mason and Colin McCarty. He also leaves behind his brother Charles Resnick, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to whom he was close. Joe died a very content man, surrounded by his loved ones with a mountain view, comforted in the knowledge that he had led a wonderful life and “wouldn’t change a thing”.
