To my dear friend and amazing mentor, co-adviser to my dissertation, David. My love and support go to his family, especially my friend Gregg Drinkwater and their daughter Sasha. Like my fellow former grad students, and so many who crossed David's path, I wouldn’t be the scholar I am now without David. I feel like an orphaned researcher. After I met David, I chose to take a seminar with him although it was really not in my Ph.D. field. This course pushed me out of my comfort zone, the cold approach of diplomatic archives, and made me realized I needed to work on people as well. The topics in David's class made me happy or angry, or sad, and everytime, David encouraged us to feel, and not just to think and analyze. To integrate this approach in my own research and to keep working with David, I transformed my dissertation topic and he became co-advisor to my new topic. I am honored that David delivered my graduation speech and presented me and my work on my graduation day in May 2019. I am sharing here a couple of pics of this very important day, and another pic of the last time I saw David, before Covid-19 blocked us from traveling and meeting with friends all around the world: in Nov-Dec 2019, Gregg and David came to Israel for a Yad Vashem conference and some research, but took time off work for warm and fun friend time as well, like a day at the beach and a shabbat dinner with my sister and some other exiled friends. I already miss you David.

Professor Shneer was the most memorable teacher I had while at CU. I loved taking his classes because he pushed his students to be their best. Professor Shneer's passion for Jewish Studies, as well as his kindness and dedication to those around him, will not be forgotten. I am so thankful I got to be one of his students. He will be greatly missed.

I was lucky enough to work with David just a couple of times when I was a rabbi in Boulder. He was a force of nature and one of those people who you you learned from just by watching. I found his energy and brilliance intimidating but discovered that he continually elevated whatever project he was involved with. Though I did not know him well, those who worked with him and learned with him repeatedly told me how extraordinary he was and how much he helped them in various ways. What a grievous loss for the Jewish community and for the many people whose lives he touched. Greg may you and your children and the entire family be comforted along with the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

My name is James Knapp and I am the Artistic Director of the Denver Gay Men's Chorus. I join all of you in the profound sadness of David's passing. David was an incredible person with a beautiful voice and a deep, radiant spirit. He was a delight to have in the chorus and was one of the most lovely participants in our organization. The singers of the chorus were wonderfully fond of him and he was always such a meticulously prepared singer and devoted member. He wrote me a wonderful card last year after one of our concerts about the importance of the work that the chorus does for the advancement of social justice and equity for all. That will now be a cherished treasure for me to remember this stunning human being. His legacy of light and positivity will live on through Greg, his beautiful daughter and all who loved him. Rest in peace David.

Oh my dear friend...my brother. From the moment I met you I knew there was a special energy surrounding you. You were a life force. So many stories but as I look at photos that beautiful, charming smile heals my broken heart. I wish you peace - may your family be embraced by the love from all us. I pledge to use my life to make you proud ~ and yes there will be fancy cocktails along the way! Jim, Diane, Gregg, Caryn & Sasha - thank you for the beautiful gift of David Shneer. I love you forever ~ “You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it (2:21).”
