Obituary of Steven L. Newman

Steven “Steve” Leonard Newman, 75, of Denver, Colorado passed away on February 28th, 2021.

 

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at 11:45am MST at Emanuel Cemetery (within Fairmount Cemetery). Rabbi Foster of Temple Emanuel will be officiating. Due to Covid-19, the service at the cemetery will be with limited attendees, but can be viewed via Zoom with request to the family for the link.

 

Steve was born in New York on June 3, 1945. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College and later received his Master’s degree and PhD from New York University.  Steve was married to the love of his life, Audrey Claire (Gobetz) Newman on August 19, 1973 in Denver, CO by Rabbi Foster; they were married for 42 years until her death in 2017.

Steve worked as a Middle School Teacher in the New York Public School system, was the Director for two labor unions CAPE and AFSCME and was a Mayoral Appointee under Mayor Wellington Webb as the Director of Human Rights and Community Relations, Director of Denver Motor Vehicle and then employed at Denver Human Services for the City and County of Denver. He enjoyed the mountains, spending time with family and friends and was a Trekkie and enjoyed anything science fiction. 

 

Steve is survived by daughter Meredith Halstead, (husband Reginald Halstead), daughter Leah Newman, (husband Nicholas Gossert), and grandson Jackson Halstead, nephews, family members and so many friends. Steven is preceded in death by his parents, Nancy and Max Newman, and his wife Audrey Newman.

 

Steve dedicated his life to giving back to his community.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the nonprofit of your choosing.

The antidote to loss is connection. Unfortunately, during this pandemic, connection is limited and is leaving grieving families isolated in the midst of mourning.
