I will miss my Dearest Henry. Henry was special in my life. I appreciated his friendship over the past 44 years and admired his passion for learning and always being current on daily affairs of our country and world. He loved good food, travel and was always listening and reading about changes in business and technology. Henry had a warmth, twinkle in his eye and kindness. I remember his sharing with me as recently as 5 years ago, that he was planning a road trip with Joan. I believe they made it as far as Death Valley. Henry was not ostentatious. A man ahead of his time... Loved Life, Family, Friends and Community. I am forever grateful that I made a trip to see him in October, memories I will always cherish. Shalom Henry....

Henry was and shall ever be a dear and beloved friend to our family since he sold my parents Norm and Evelyn “Dutch” Kurtz our home on Elizabeth Street in 1957! My mother became his secretary and he mentored and encouraged her to earn her real estate license, a career she loved until the end of her life in 1993. Henry and Joan were bright, shining stars in our family’s life, including their children Pam and Andy, and later Joan and Mimi (and dogs Billy and Max!). I will be forever grateful to have enjoyed and been uplifted beyond words by Henry’s great mind, political savvy, marvelous sense of humor and wisdom about life. He was a truly great man. Our love and sympathy to the family. Kristi Kurtz Clark

Henry, oh Henry! What a gentle, kind, brilliant, generous, caring, patient, yet driven, sophisticated, and loving human. It was a true honor to work with Henry and subsequently call him "Friend." He leaves a tremendous legacy! Henry will forever hold a special place in my heart and I will forever cherish him and the many fond lessons learned from his wise soul. Many condolences to his beloved family!

Dear Joan and Family,
The loss of Henry has brought back so many memories for us. We tried to trace the history of Dad and Henry back to where it started and think it started the year we moved here from Texas in 1955! That's a long-time friendship!
Dad loved Henry, and we know Henry loved our dad. He was a big part of our lives and we felt like he was part of the family. We don't think he ever missed a graduation, or wedding, or the introduction of a new grandchild into our family, and we know mom and dad participated in many of your own family functions as well.
Their shared interest in building and real estate is what really brought them together. God gave each of them talent and wisdom to build their trade. Dad relied on Henry to put good business sense on the table and Dad provided the building expertise. They were a good team. Together they had an honest relationship and it helped them run a profitable business. They drew from one another and learned from one another and they were better men because of it.
Although they had different views on many topics they respected each others opinions. One thing they held in common was a desire to make the world a better place. We know our dad had a lot of discussions with Henry about theological issues, and we believe that God brought them together to teach them of His great love.
Henry always took time to ask us how we were and what we were up to. He took every opportunity to try and help us by getting us in touch with someone, or passing our name along or giving us the name of an organization that might be helpful.
We will never forget Henry's kindness and the loving friendship he extended to our family. He exhibited unswerving faithfulness and generosity to our father and we have been blessed because of his presence in our lives.
With warmest regards,
The Alva Freeman kids,
Nancy Swingle, Gary Freeman, Julia Kunse and Susan LeBlanc

My tears fall freely as I remember Henry. I am so very sad, and send my love and thoughts to you on your significant loss. I can still hear my parents (Walter and Lotty Stark) speak so fondly of Henry after returning from some function they’d enjoyed together. Of course the Luxembourg connection didn’t hurt! I still recall the last time I saw him, shortly before my son Mitchell started pharmacy school not quite two years ago. He was as I will always remember him – warm, full of conversation, encouraging, and always with a twinkle in his eye.

I met Henry in 1970 when I ran for the State legislature at 25. For many years he was part of my political and social circle and a good and kind friend. As we all aged we mostly met at funerals and I am sad that I cannot do for him what he did for so many. But he remains in my memory as a living entity. This is a last hug for him

I met Henry shortly after moving to Colorado from the Washington, D.C, area. We became fast friends due to our mutual philosophies regarding life and our passion to show respect for the philosophies of other cultures and traditions of medicine and healthcare. We both felt that there was much to learn and integrate into our healthcare system. I was deeply honored by his request to donate my personal library to the collection and, having witnessed his steadfast dedication to providing educational materials to the CU community and beyond, did not hesitate. Over the years, Henry and I developed a beautiful friendship which went far beyond our mutual interest regarding the collection. He loved CU and was deeply touched by having the Health Sciences Library bear his name. I thoroughly enjoyed the gatherings with him and his wonderful family and will cherish these beautiful memories which will always remain my heart. I will miss him dearly.
With love,
Len Wisneski

Henry was one of my earliest political mentors, in the tight-knit community that was Arapahoe County's Democratic Party. In 1970, As a 32-year-old with no political experience, I was one of the least likely volunteers to attract his attention. At that time, he served as our County Party Chair, who was seeking someone to manage a fund-raising enterprise in the western part of our county. Patiently, he recruited and trained me in the practice of politics, working with me through several stages of my metamorphosis as a Party regular. Three short years later, he chose me as his Vice Chair, soon to succeed him as Chair so that he could run state-wide for the office of Colorado's Treasurer. Henry was indefatigable, committed, quick to defuse stressful situations that all leaders encounter. I watched him carefully. And benefited from his leadership by example as I took on additional responsibilities for the Democratic Party. Henry lit the spark for me. I will always be grateful for his kindness, good humor, and generosity. We owe him so much. Many of us, his successors, have done our best to emulate his leadership. And continue.
