Bill was an available, steady and wise friend for me over the course of nearly 60 years. This, beginning in psychiatric residency training when he oriented me with optimism as a new resident from the class ahead as I came with Joyce to Colorado after spending a medical training year at the University of Minnesota. Our friendship in learning continued when we were trainees in the newly emerging Denver Psychoanalytic Institute, then later when we were fellows together serving on the Board of Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and in the years since, when he contributed such useful advice for those of us in research and clinical work within our fields and beyond. His warm and welcoming smile, his openness and eagerness for helping others with expanding our knowledge by encouraging those in the next generations, as well as his expressed closeness and love for family, above all, have inspired me. Then and now.
My heartfelt condolences to Paula and Eric and others in family. He will be missed by me and by so many. May his helping memories and his wisdom continue to comfort and live on with us. Bob Emde.
