He was one of my most favorite professors of all time. He loved what he did and was able to make history classes so interesting by making us watch movie clips highlighting a certain historical point. He was very energetic, kind, and incredibly smart. Even though I thought he might not remember me (because of large class size), the recommendation letter that he wrote me was so detailed, and representative of my positive academic performance, and positive character and personality traits. He will stay in my mind and heart as one of my most favorite professors I have ever had.

I just learned of Professor Gilbert's passing, or as he asked me to call him "Don Arturo." He was the reason I changed my undergraduate Major from Psychology to International Relations (after my first class with Art I knew I wanted to learn all that I could from him, and the only way to take all his classes was to change my Major, so I did). His lessons were thought-provoking, funny, interesting and insightful. He was the best professor I've ever had. After graduating, he became my mentor and dear friend. We kept in touch and talked about the state of the world, our lives, and our dreams. While I'm saddened I won't have the opportunity to visit Cuba with him and smoke a cigar on the Malecon - something we tried to scheme during a coffee visit - I'm grateful for the wisdom and friendship he brought to my life. I will never forget, he once said that the key to a long life is to sing and smile every day. Don Arturo, I promise I will do just that. Sending my condolences to his friends and family.

I first took graduate courses with Art in the late-90s and then did a few independent studies with him. At that time he was an oasis in the desert of GSIS's program; one of the few professors there whose work and interests fulfilled the institution's promise of interdisciplinarity. He trusted his students and allowed them to work in directions they wanted to go. This was a symptom of his broad intellectualism and open-mindedness, which gradually brought him up against cultural trends that have, sadly, come to prevail and now constrain free thinking in our nation. A genuine educator whose career spanned more than half a century, he witnessed high-education's decades-long lobotomy from the inside, and retired at about the time it had become thoroughly stuporous. By contrast, Art remained lively, interested, and interesting. He was willing to defend unpopular positions and engage controversial ideas in a forthright way, that that was brave. His intellectual courage was rooted in and demonstrated his exceptional honesty. I last saw Art shortly after his son (who was my age) had died, yet he was engaging despite that terrible loss. I had the privilege of speaking with him on the phone in 2020 and he was concerned to know that I was doing well. His concern for others and his productively provocative teaching methods influenced many of us positively, in no small part by reassuring us that we could work on less conventional but potentially more worthwhile subjects. We remember Art fondly, and with gratitude, and shall ensure that his legacy will endure.

Condolences to Arthur's family, friends, and all the lives he touched. Dr. Gilbert was a true mensch in all the great meanings of the word and a brilliant teacher. I had several graduate courses with Art, as well as reading much of his published work. His joy of teaching and his humor always shone through. I recall his easy and constant smile and laugh as he taught and talked with others. I also took his excursion/class to Costa Rica twice, once as a student and a second time as a teaching aid. In the generous way that Art mentored students, I also co-authored several papers, and attended several conferences with him. He clearly loved the life of the mind and exploring and enjoying what the world had to offer. I certainly miss the conversations in his office or over a meal, and the insights and critical thinking that always resulted. His courses were popular, but sometimes overlooked was the courageous intellectual depth of those courses as well. I owe a great deal of gratitude and affection for the time and influence that he provided to me, and to all of his students and colleagues. The world would be far better if more in academia and beyond embraced the shear joy of teaching and learning that Art came by so naturally.

In 1976 Art Gilbert taught a Military History seminar at GSIS together with Prof. Shultzinger which inspired and influenced me possibly as much as my work with Prof. David Bayley. I will remember all three as mentors in my life and still think of them often. Art was a mensch and I am certain he will be sorely missed by family and friends.

My sincerest condolences to you Kathy and all your family -such a special man. I had a close DU connection with Arthur as a fellow DU employee and as a non-traditional student. I got to know Arthur very well, taking three courses with him, but most importantly to me was when I joined his two-week study abroad class to Costa Rica in November 2000. I got to travel around with him during times when the other students were cut loose to explore. That experience was just what I needed at that point in my life. I will never forget Arthur who was a loyal friend and confidant, and I will miss his kind spirit and seeing him on campus and our ongoing conversations. Peace to Arthur's family and the many folks who loved him.

Paula Ruth Gilbert posted a condolence

From Paula Ruth Gilbert:
Arthur was truly my beloved older (by 9 years) brother and the intellectual guiding light of my life. He introduced me to painting and sculpture during the summer when I turned 13, when he took me to the Rhode Island School of Design Art Museum. He was the foundation, along with my mother, father, and sister, of my love for Broadway musicals and opera. He was my hero when he bicycled around Europe with American Youth Hostels while he was in college. He must have been the inspiration for my chosen career in academe, since I do remember that when at the age of 13, I was asked what I wanted to do when I grew up, I obnoxiously said that I wanted a Ph.D. So he had his (British military history), from the Tufts University Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and became a Professor of History and International Relations at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He was a born teacher and researcher, and he and I talked endlessly over the years about academic life. [And I thought that we were such intellectual "jet setters" when he was teaching for a year in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and I was studying as an undergraduate in Paris. We sent letters back and forth between the two countries, and I thought that we were beyond cool!] We talked all the time about history, politics, current events, gender, music, film, travel, and art (and his massive old master print art collection). But most of all, he was my protector, always checking up on me, calling me just about every day whenever I was sick and throughout the pandemic. And he was always upbeat about everything, cheering everyone up, singing show tunes, laughing, and joking (except about the American political scene, the demise of democracy, and crises in the Middle East). The last few months, after he had his stroke and as the dementia worsened, were very hard. Kathy was amazing, staying with him usually 24/7, singing to him, and keeping me up to date as much as possible. Her grief is bottomless. I just can't imagine what my life is going to be without our phone calls, trips to stay with him and Kathy in Denver or at his house on Cape Cod, lunches and dinners together in Paris throughout the years, talking about the articles that I constantly sent to him about mutual interests. Sorry--I'm going on too long. I'm just so sad.

Arthur was my friend and I shall miss him terribly.
We were both New Englanders, he from the streets of Providence, Rhode Island, I from the hills of Northwest Connecticut. He was born in 1936, and I in 1941.
I first met Arthur when I was a graduate student and took a course on revolution that he taught.
As I had majored in history at college, I was quite interested in the subject, especially the French Revolution, about which Arthur always said, “If you know the French revolution, you will understand revolution.”
I was older than the other students and very familiar with the topic. He would ask the class questions about some aspect of the subject, and I would usually be the one with the answers. One day, after I had responded, Arthur turned to the class, while pointing at me, told them: “You know, I hired him to come into this class to answer my question. He is here to keep the discussion flow going.”
He twinkled, they tittered, nervously.
One the first day, as I entered his class, Tahira Khan, a PhD student, stopped me, saying, “You will have a wonderful time in that class.”
And so I have.
Arthur is my friend and I miss him terribly.

Few people have had a more tangible impact on my life than Arthur. How fortunate I am to have had him as my brother in law... he made me feel important and loved, and most of all valued. Arthur's gift to us all was being our greatest cheerleader, no matter our undertaking. I will miss his unending support of us, and his passionate belief that we could all be achieve our dreams. Most of all, I will miss seeing him smile as he talked about Kathy. His love for her was unparalleled... and knowing that my sister had such a champion makes me so very grateful. Our family has an irreparable hole, but is, at the same time, so much stronger for having had him in our lives. We love you so, Arthur. Your generosity and support will be not be forgotten. Arthur was a great supporter of Kathy and her music. What I will always remember is the way he sat in the audience when Kathy was performing and was thoroughly engaged. He sang along from time to time and had the biggest smile!
He would challenge Paul (Christy's husband) to see who would be at the most performances of our shows! He was a great and generous man who will be missed. Sending love and prayers to the family. Christy and Paul Wessler

So my family, the Wexler Basye family, have known Arthur for 30+ years. We’ve had so many great dinners with Kathy and Arthur and our daughters Kate and Sara. What I will always remember is how interested and inquisitive Arthur was about our lives, especially our travels. He always wanted to know how the girls were doing and he would always ask them about school and their hobbies. We loved him and will miss him greatly. David Rachel Kate & Sara

Arthur and Kathy traveled to Paris many times. Once it worked out that my mother and I were going to be there the same time as they were. What a great time we had, wandering together and hearing Arthur's stories. We also ate a fantastic dinner together at a restaurant they knew. While we have so many wonderful memories of Arthur, that trip is a special one to me. I will miss Arthur and his love of life. Rachel
