Obituary of Lori Jan Marks Cooney

Lori Jan Marks Cooney was born in Merrick, Long Island in July of 1959. She attended John F. Kennedy Highschool there, then went onto graduate from SUNY College of Buffalo with a degree in elementary education in 1981. Lori went on to become an outspoken school choice advocate, working with parents, school faculty, and legislators to shape policy and inspire many. She worked for several online schools and held various volunteer positions, notably leading the Colorado Coalition for Cyber School Families. She was a ray of sunshine in the lives of so many, to her numerous friends, and the thousands of students she worked with across the state, country, and world.

Lori was a mother to three children, to whom she dedicated her life to educating and raising. She is survived by her three children: Her sons, Sean Cooney and Shannon Cooney, and her daughter, Ashlyn Cooney. She is also survived by her cat, Waffle Cooney. Lori passed away on March 7th, 2023, in her home, surrounded by her family and friends.
