Obituary of Stephen N. Berkowitz
Stephen Nathan Berkowitz (1943-2023) of Denver, Colorado died at his home from complications of Parkinson’s Disease on September 24, 2023. Steve was born in Denver in 1943 to Emil and Molly Berkowitz. Steve graduated from George Washington High School in 1961 before earning a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 1965. In 1968, he received his J.D. from the University of Denver where was on the Law Review.
Steve was a prominent civil litigator for three decades, first at Brenman, Sobel and Baum, P.C. and then at Lutz and Berkowitz, P.C. before becoming a part-time mediator. Outside of his work, he was an active member of Denver Young Democrats and the Allied Jewish Federation. Steve was a board member of the Anti-Defamation League of Colorado and the president of Jewish Family Services of Colorado.
Steve is survived by Sandy, his wife of 55 years, his son Todd Berkowitz (Melanie Fischer), his daughter Amy Berkowitz Caplan (Ilan Caplan), grandchildren Roberto and Sofia Berkowitz, Naftali, Danya and Devra Caplan, sisters Dena Schneider and Harriet Feld, sister and brother-in-law Suzan and Allan Markman and sister-in-law Noreen Stillman.
Services will be held on Tuesday, September 26th at 1:00 PM at Temple Sinai, livestream provided by Temple Sinai. Interment to follow at Mount Nebo Cemetery. Contributions can be made to to Parkinson Association of the Rockies or Jewish Family Service.
