Obituary of Walter Brooks

Walter "Wally" Brooks has passed away at the age of 89. He was born in Passaic, New Jersey to Rose and Louis Schoenbrun, immigrants from Hungary. When he was very young Walter began collecting stamps and by age nine became an entrepreneur, buying and selling stamps from around the world. He built his first house when he was just 17 and went on to develop a home-building company which constructed more than 600 houses in Colorado Springs. During World War II Walter was an Air Force Captain. While stationed in Pueblo, Colorado he met his future bride, Harriet Goodman. They were married for 62 years living in New York, Pueblo and Colorado Springs. Walter Brooks was active in many civic groups including Kiwanis International as a member more than 50 years serving as Pikes Peak Club president and lieutenant governor of the Rocky Mountain District, twice honored as a George Hixson International Fellow. He was vice president of Temple Shalom and president of Civic Theater. After Walter graduated from Colorado College he and his wife actively supported the college becoming founders of the Friends of Tutt Library and founding board members for the southwest studies program. He was a supporter of UCCS establishing the Walter and Harriet Brooks Scholarship Foundation and also served on the board of directors at Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife Harriet, children Mark (Terry Samuel) and Judy (Lee) Frank and three grandchildren, Asher Frank and Aaron and Estee Brooks. Graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 11 AM at Sons of Israel/Evergreen Cemetery, 105 South Hancock, Colorado Springs with concluding service and reception at Temple Beit Torah. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or charity of your choice.
