Our grandmother was an incredible woman. She made sure to have a big impact in each of her grandchildren’s lives. Family was very important to her, and being in her grandchildren’s lives was something she worked very hard to do.
While all of our experiences with her are unique to us, one common thread we all experienced was her joy for life and energy. She was a grandmother who never sat still. She always was doing an activity with us and wanted to show us new things. I think we would all describe her an energetic grandmother who kept us going and on our toes
She was also fearless and was always up for an adventure. I will always remember her going on the rollercoaster with me at Santa Monica pier. It’s such a distinct memory of her that I will never forget. I remember thinking, “wow, my grandma is really cool! She even put her hand up in the air!”
She had a strong passion to see the world and take advantage of every experience she could. The first international trip I remember them going on, was trip to China. I remember the stories, photos and souvenirs she brought back and being fascinated with her trip. Her wonder for the world showed me just how much is out there to see. And as a young child she opened my eyes to just how big the world is.
Grandma had a great love of making. She was a very talented seamstress and quilter. Many of us still go to sleep under the quilts she made us. Her love of us is woven into every stitch of those quilts. Through the very personalised fabric choice that was chosen for each of us specifically based on our interests, to even the size which reflected what stage we were at in our lives. Her quilts were her way of showing us how much she loved each and everyone of us. And when we cuddle up under one of her quilts, you can feel the love and care she had for us.
Grandma and grandpa cared and loved their family so much. They were very proud of what everyone has accomplish throughout their life. They tried to be there at all of their grandchildren’s big life events and flew to see all of us graduate from high school.
Our grandmother loved us all, and we loved her. She was an incredible woman filled with a certain “je ne sais quoi”. She’s left us all a little part of her in the things she made us. So if your ever feeling lonely, or just need the comfort of grandma have a little snuggle under one of her quilts, or give your pillow pal a squeeze and she’ll be right there with you whenever you need her.

So many wonderful memories from cousin Pamela
It’s a difficult week since Wednesday marks nine years without my mother. And your mom’s passing has awoken so many more memories: Thanksgivings, Passover Seders, our wedding (5/28/2000), and our 2018 visit to Denver. I will treasure these moments with your parents.

Judy,
My deepest condolences to you and your family.
My mom loved to have parties bringing together family.
It was interesting to read about life on Devon Street. My mom, used to talk about her house on Nazing Street as a place that had many parties for friends and family. I think she said that cousin Rose had a bridal shower there.
She talked about being close with her aunt’s family and visited them every Sunday night and the all the woman cousins sat around and ate her aunt’s delicious cooking.
When my folks moved to Florida, I know they enjoyed spending time with your folks. When my mom had her stroke, Marian helped my mom recover. Her compassion, friendship and nursing knowledge made a big difference to help my mom. She was a wonderful person.
May the memories of your mom bring you comfort.
❤️

I wish to extend our condolences to you, Phil, and your entire family. Marian was a cousin I looked up to and admired all of my life. I will miss her.
You have asked if I could relate memories I had of your mom and the Devon Street experience back in the late 1940’s and 1950’s.
These are some of the things I recall:
68 Devon Street-it was a two family structure typical of the houses built in many parts of the city in the early 20th century. Each apartment had two bedrooms and one bathroom.
Your grandmother and grandfather (my Aunt Rose and Uncle Dave) lived on the first floor with their family.
Bubbie and Grandpa (your great grandparents) were on the top floor. There was an attic room where Aunt Jane lived. There was a boarder for a time in the second bedroom.
The first floor layout was somewhat different. I remember Eleanor occupying one bedroom, your mother and Aunt Sylvia shared a second bedroom. Attached to that room was Teddy’s room, hardly larger than a closet. ( I spent a lot of time there). Your grandparents used the dining room as their bedroom.
The house was a gathering spot almost every Sunday as we all lived within a couple of miles from the house. I don’t think anyone had a car until after the war. The only vehicle I remember was Uncle Dave’s “herring truck”. He sold smoked fish to the food marts up and down Blue Hill Avenue. The truck had a distinct odor. (I can still smell it as I am writing this)
Nantasket
In the summers of 1947 and 1948, Aunt Trudy and my mother rented a cottage on C Street in Nantasket.
At that time Paula was not even born. My brother was an infant. But still that made eight individuals in the cottage. Your mother was the live-in babysitter for all of us. That made nine people (3 small bedrooms one bath. Forget about A/C))
Joyce, Marian, and I slept in the third bedroom. On most weekends (it seemed to my father) Aunt Jane would come. She shared a bed with Joyce. That made 10 people. When my grandparents came, that made twelve. I don’t recall what arrangements there were on those occasions.
They were tight quarters, but we still got to the beach every day.
Lots of happy memories as I write this 75 years later.
