As I prepare our Lighthouse Villas community newsletter and reserve a space to honor our dear former neighbor and family friend, Phyllis, I learned about this site so wanted to share a memory with her family, especially her sister Georgene who had to handle all the logistics of Phyllis's passing, which wasn't easy, thank you Georgene!
Each day when I walk our dog past her house, Bandit tries to run up the steps to see Norman or when we go down the alley he runs straight to their back gate as he has done for the past 5 years, it makes my heart ache.
I miss my dear friend of 17 years, she was like an older sister to me even though she was almost my moms age we had a special bond. She used to help us when my boys were little and we needed someone to pickup from school or drop off at hockey practice, she was always there when we needed her and in return I would spend countless hours helping her with her laptop or that damn printer she could never get to print or fix something on her cell phone, she was always fighting tech. Twice a year I'd have to go show her how to reset her clock (again) for the time change! One year I tried to buy her an Atomic clock so she wouldn't have to mess with it and she yelled at me and told me to send it back! Standard Phyllis way, we argued often but we always made up. Now I realize why she never wanted me to buy her that damn atomic clock, it was her way of getting me over to her house to have a glass of wine and visit, something I did often but now in hindsight I guess not enough. She was a special friend and neighbor and like family to all of us and will ALWAYS have a place in our hearts. The LUFKINS (Paul, Tracy, Josh/Xavier, Matthew, and Bandit)

With her mane of dark hair, Phyllis had more zip than the Energizer Bunny, and always seemed ready with a stream of jokes or questions. We live only about 200 yards from her, and were deeply touched by her commitment to and care for our neighborhood. In my (David) last conversation with her, just the day before she made her last trip to hospital, she expressed her strong yearning that a spirit of compassion and concern for the well-being of all our neighbors would not fade, despite our living in a time of diminishing civility on the national and international scenes…. What a profound gift of hope!
And then she offered two new jokes….
With our love,
Susan and David Trickett

It was in 2009 when we first met Phylis through mutual friends in Aspen. After several visits with her, we developed a strong friendship between us. In the 15 years that we’ve known her, I could feel the warmth and compassion she had for us, therefore we became very close friends. Phylis was a lovely soul who cared a lot about people and animals although she had a few quirks about her, overall she was a fine individual. We loved her dearly, she was like family to us. She will always be in our hearts and remembered. Chi-Chi and Gordon Chu .

Phyllis was so generous and nurturing. She would always pick me up from a flight into Denver or drop me off at the airport. We had some fun slumber parties. An assortment of cheeses, nuts, vino etc were always around. She felt like instant family. I”ll miss her so much!

Phyllis and I commuted to work at Tenet Healthcare in Santa Monica over 30 years ago. We both left home early in order to beat the traffic. And we met in the ladies’ room while putting on our makeup. We immediately became fast friends. And I wish to share two memories:
1 - After relocating to Denver, she tried to persuade me to move there. So I stayed with her for a long week end to see if I would like it. One morning, I joined her in bed and she turned on the TV. An old WWII movie was playing. All the characters were portrayed by dogs, with specific breeds representing specific countries. They were in full costume and, for the most part, they walked on their hind legs.
Every time a ‘German’ dog came on the screen, Blanche ran around and barked like crazy. It was hysterical! Phyl and I were laughing so hard we were crying. And that almost convinced me to move.
It was one of my favorite moments with her.
2 – When I started dating a man I was serious about, Phyl asked me where he was from. New Jersey. Where exactly? Highland Park. The questions kept coming until she screamed out, “I know his family!!”
While that’s another story for another time, what were the odds? Was there anyone on the planet she didn’t know?
Phyl was such a wonderful person! Always thoughtful, generous, and full of life. Everyone who knew her will miss her terribly. I already do….
