I met Helen 10 years ago (give or take a few!) when we both took a memoir writing class. It was a wonderful class that encouraged each member to write in their own style about their own life. Helen wrote in vivid words about her early life growing up in Innwood a community at the northern edge of New York City. I could visualize the stories she told - Helen and her siblings honoring Christian Sundays and their Jewish friends honoring Saturday services - the kids sharing the different goodies that the 2 cultures gave out on each of the holy days but what grabbed me the most was her description of her family life - a very tight knit loving family. When the class was over 4 of the class members - including Helen and myself - were eager to continue writing and decided to work together on our own. For several years we kept fairly closely to an every other week schedule and then to once a month. We met in each others homes - sharing food and talk and reading our writings to each other. The 4 of us were quite different from each other - very different life experiences and backgrounds but developed a great feeling of trust that allowed us to venture into deeply personal writings and to get to known each other in a close way. In a very poignant meeting Helen who was turning 80 used a writing to tell us of her tragic diagnosis.. Helen was one of the most competent, smart, focused, caring woman I have ever known. Her writings celebrated her children and her grandchildren - she was very rich in grandchildren - I needed frequent reminders of their names there were so many and she adored them all. She was elegant, kept a beautiful house, read widely, was a committed friend and citizen -never afraid to take a stand and work for good. I believe she was devastated by the death of her oldest son who died in the midst of his prime but that she forged on. The ravages of Parkinson hit her hard and she reached out sharing her decision with group members for hospice. Our group was never complete if all 4 of us weren't in attendance but her presence will always be with us and our gratitude about having known her and our love her will always be there. I know she will be deeply missed by family and friends and express my condolences for your profound loss. Wendy Smith

Heather, Kelly, Keith, and Billy,
I was very sad to hear about the passing of your mom. I have fond memories of her from my childhood and multiple trips to Denver throughout the years. I remember her wonderful cooking when I was visiting and her smile and warmth were unforgettable. I feel fortunate I was able see her in NYC in 2017, along with Dan, Julie, Kelly, and Heather and witnessed firsthand how happy she was to be with her children and grandchildren (Agnes and Kyle) and Heather always filled me in on her travels and how involved she was in all of your lives. She was a wonderful person and I know this is a huge loss for all of you. Sending love, peace and comfort during this difficult time.

I am so sorry to hear about Helen's passing. She was a fun, worldly, compassionate and insightful person. I thoroughly enjoyed our periodic get-togethers. She was also a great support to me when I was a caregiver for a relative. Truly a special friend and social worker.... Sending love and hugs to family members.
