Obituary of Philip Garvin

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Philip Garvin. He is survived by his wife Angela, children Jana, Leah and Nick and three grandchildren. In his last months of life he regularly shared, “No one has had a better life than mine!” and described his love for his family and passion for his career. Philip was responsible for the production technology of live sports, news, and entertainment; he launched the HD revolution of the early 2000’s by co-founding HDNet, and is recognized by the sports-video-production industry with both an Emmy Award and an upcoming induction into the Sports Video Hall of Fame (sportsvideo.org for more highlights of his career). Born in NYC, Philip was passionate about telling visual stories from an early age. A graduate of Yale University, he published multiple photography books and produced several documentaries, including the PBS docuseries Religious America in 1974 and Countdown to the White House, helped produce the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour and spearheaded the PBS News’ western production center in Denver. He lived by the motto, “Take advantage of every opportunity.” Philip moved to CO in the early 80’s to live his dream of being a cowboy. He relished every moment with Angela on their ranch riding horses, mowing fields and building fences. His family celebrates Philip’s valuable achievements, dedicated relationships and generous heart.

A public memorial will be held on September 29th in Larkspur, CO. Philip was dedicated to prostate cancer research; he was a patient in clinical trials for the now FDA approved PSMA scans and Pluvitco treatment which he hopes will save many lives. It was his wish that any memorial tributes be made in the form of charitable donations to the UC Health Prostate Cancer Research Fund
