JoAnn retired from teaching 4th grade at Stephen Knight Fundamental Academy, Room 104. I was the young teacher who took her place in Room 104, and my name is Joanne. It was destiny that the Joanne's have a legacy in that classroom. We became good friends over the years and she was my subsititute teacher at Knight during my wedding week and honeymoon which, unfortunately, coincided with the first DPS teacher strike. Even though she knew she would need to cross the picket line, she was steadfast in her commitment to honor the substitute role for me. Over the years we stayed in touch and when I became a principal at another school, she was willing to make the long drive across town and substitute teach...the kids and staff loved when she was there. Fast forward to more recently when she learned that I had stepped into a temprorary substitute principal role at Stephen Knight in 2022, she unexpectedly came to the school to visit. We took a photo together in the hallway. (See attacched) My regret after she left was that we didn't go down to the classroom where we both taught and snap the photo there. We exchanged holiday cards and emails over the many years of friendship. She was a wonderful person and I'll miss her spunk and infectious smile. May her memory be for a blessing to all.
