I met Jerry for the first time very, very late on Halloween night after Ilana called him in a panic because we couldn’t find a taxi downtown and were likely stranded in 20-degree weather. He was quick to jump to our rescue and promptly made the 45 min drive to pick us up. I was nervous to meet Ilana’s Dad, especially at 2:30am after a long night of bar hopping, dressed up as Cat Woman no less, but I quickly learned that I didn’t need to be nervous. Jerry had the warmest and kindest presence. He had the uncanny ability to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable in any situation. There was never awkward silence with Jerry. His gift of gab was shared with anyone with ears, whether they were listening or not. He was an expert joke teller and prank puller - many gifts I see reflected in Ilana. His gentle demeanor defied his dementia diagnosis. Though he lost pieces of himself, he continued to be his warm and jovial self. Thank you, Jerry, for welcoming me into your family. I will miss you dearly.
