Obituary of Iran M. Emeson

Iran M. Emeson died peacefully on January 6, 2025 at The Denver Hospice, at the age of 94. Born in Denver, Iran was the eldest son of Harold (z”l) and Mildred Emeson (z”l) and had four younger siblings: Eugene (Jean), Howard (z”l) (Ro-Myrna) (z”l), Candy, and Bruce (z”l). Iran was adored by his wife of 62 years, Joan Emeson, his three children, Carl Newmark (Penny), Linda Gellis (Philip), and Donnie Emeson (Jen Kraft) and his grandchildren, Chad and Brett (Marea) Newmark and Amanda and David (Andrea) Gellis. Iran is also beloved by his great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Raised on Denver’s West side, Iran, known as Sonny in his youth, graduated from North High School in 1948 and afterwards served as a navigator in the US Air Force. Upon discharge, Iran received a business degree from the University of Denver. He then managed a paper factory in Pueblo as well as rental properties for several years before moving back to Denver. There he reunited with a childhood friend, Joan Weiss, whom he married in 1962. They shared 62 happy years together — known by friends and loved ones as the perfect couple.

Iran used his astute entrepreneurial and business skills to create Imports International in the 1960s, which became a leader in the ski-accessory business. He built his career around his passions, working in the industry he loved, the world of skiing and the mountains. He also fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning and operating a small local ski area, St. Mary’s Glacier Ski Area, which offered an opportunity to ski to those who might not otherwise be able to afford it. Iran strived to share his love of skiing with everyone.

Iran had a warm and engaging personality, a beguiling smile and a unique sense of humor. He was wholeheartedly devoted to his family and loved to ski, fix things, hike, play the piano, travel, and garden. Iran and Joan were inseparable. Their happy life together included membership of the BMH-BJ for more than 60 years, enjoying the fellowship of their Havurah for more than 30 years. They also volunteered weekly at bingo for 10 years to help support BMH/BJ. For many years after retirement, Iran dedicated his time to the SBA helping other startup entrepreneurs.
