Obituary of Dalice L. Hertzberg

Dalice L. Hertzberg. February 10, 1951 - October 26, 2011. After a long and valiant struggle with cancer, Dalice died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday. Her beloved husband, her brother-in-law, and dear friends were at her side when she passed away. She is survived by Howard, her husband of 28 years; her brother-in-law, Jeff Hertzberg; her sister-in-law, Marsha Kaufman; many cousins; and more true friends than stars in the sky. Dalice was the only child of Gardiner and Alice Miller, wonderful parents who predeceased her by many years. She was born in Indiana, and raised in Ludington, Michigan. Dalice obtained her BSN in Nursing from the University of Colorado, School of Nursing in 1980.  She began her career as an orthopedic and rehabilitation nurse at The Childrenâs Hospital. In 1991, she earned her MSN degree in Pediatric Nursing.  She later obtained a Post Masters Certificate and was Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner.  Since 1991, Dalice held a faculty position in the CU School of Medicine and College of Nursing and was a highly respected and beloved colleague. Daliceâs passion was serving those with special needs, and she taught and inspired graduate students for serving children with such needs. She was a co-author of a widely used textbook, Pediatric Rehabilitation Nursing, worked with the Colorado Spina Bifida Association and served on the Advisory Board of the Mile High Down Syndrome Association. She was an invited speaker at national conferences on developmental disabilities. In 1989, after the Armenian earthquake, Project Hope recruited Dalice to go to Armenia with a team that assessed the victimsâ medical needs. She returned for 3 months with Project Hope to provide medical care, and lived in austere conditions, and again returned in 1992 for 2 months to provide care. In 1994 she was invited to accompany a medical team to Vietnam, where for 3 weeks she taught rehabilitation nursing. For the past 10 years, Dalice worked one day a week at Metro Community Provider Network clinics in Aurora, providing primary care to low income adults with developmental disabilities. Countless times on her days off she would make home care visits to clinic patients, and in violation of clinic rules would take pet food to patients who could barely afford food for their pets. Dalice also was a consultant to the U.S. Department of Justice, evaluating the quality of care at state-run developmental disability facilities that were under federal probation. Dalice shared her husbandâs love for backpacking, camping, and traveling. They took at least two weeks vacation yearly, including traveling to the Caribbean, Hawaii, Costa Rica, New Zealand, most of Western Europe, South Africa, Thailand, and most of the national parks in the West. Dalice died three days after she, her husband, and a dear friend returned from a one week trip to Maui, where she had a wonderful view of nothing but ocean and Molokai, and she thoroughly enjoyed herself. Dalice is and will be sorely missed by all. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Dalice Hertzberg, to the Colorado Spina Bifida Association, P.O. Services will be this Sunday at Temple Micah (in Park Hill Congregational Church building), 2600 Leyden (Denver), at 3:00.
