Obituary of Barbara Cohen

Barbara R. Cohen a homemaker and proud native of Cheyenne WY died Tuesday September 11 2007 at her home. She was 81. Her death was from liver failure and followed a three-year battle with the effects of osteoporosis. Mrs. Cohen who was in excellent health for most of her life resided in The Medallion an assisted living community affiliated with Seven Acres Jewish Care Services. Born in Cheyenne on February 17 1926 Mrs. Cohen also lived for long periods in Denver and Houston where she raised her family and was a loyal fan of the Broncos and Astros. The daughter of a suffragette she graduated from Cheyenne High School and attended the University of Texas before marrying Stanley B. Cohen a hide trader in 1951. They had been married 48 years when Mr. Cohen passed away in 2000. The couple had two sons Jeffrey D. Cohen of Houston and Michael B. Cohen of Chicago. During World War II Mrs. Cohen was a civil service worker at Fort Warren in Cheyenne and at Los Alamos. After her marriage to Mr. Cohen a WWII veteran the couple soon moved to Houston. Mrs. Cohen was a talented artisan and created works of art based on photos in fashion magazines or on other works she admired. She was an expert at creating objects like flower arrangements and jewelry from beads. She often sold her work. She also was a master at cross-stitch and an exceptionally gifted knitter. Mrs. Cohen loved newspapers and periodicals and worked the crossword puzzle as fast as anyone. At Scrabble she loved thumping (an eight-letter word worth 66 points) her son a newspaper editor. In addition to her sons Mrs. Cohen is survived by daughters-in-law Kathryn M. Kase of Houston and Marci Cohen of Charlotte N.C. grandchildren Jessica Cohen of St. Charles IL and Seth Cohen of Charlotte brother Arthur Rosenblum of Hillside N.J. and many loving nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of Anna Gilman Rosenblum and Jacob Rosenblum of Cheyenne. Mr. Rosenblum was a painting contractor who also sold insurance and real estate and settled in Wyoming at the turn of the century. Anna and Jacob Rosenblum had six children. Graveside service Sunday 12 Noon Rose Hill Cemetery in Commerce City CO. A memorial service also will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services 6200 North Braeswood Houston. The family asks that donations be made in her name to Seven Acres Jewish Care Services in Houston.
