The shiva for Sue and the tributes from her family were beautiful. I was honored to be there. Sue was a gracious, caring, and vibrant person who touched my life in important ways beginning in my high school years. Much later, I was delighted that my parents moved a few doors away from Sue and Milt Spielman (another wonderful human being), and I was, happily, able to continue our connection until her move to Colorado. I truly loved Sue and am deeply saddened by her passing. My condolences to her wonderful extended family and to all who loved her.

I attended and thought the service, especially the tributes and eulogies, were beautiful and moving. The love expressed in each, and the warm memories recalled, were a perfect reflection of what a very special and wonderful woman she was.

I first remember the powerful, empowering embrace of Sues unfailing love when I was a young girl of four.
Another thing I remember about her as a young child - she was my moms only friend who wore sequins-adorned clothes during the daytime.
In the years since I left home I've been blessed with Tommys friendship, rare and welcome sightings of his brothers, and the occasional joyous reunion with Sue.
Here's what the interceding decades taught me about Sue::
Her love was unfailing, her embraces - powerful and empowering.
The sequins she wore were redundant. The essence of Sue will twinkle and shine in my heart as brightly after her death as it did during her life.

Jeff and I were honored to be a part of the shiva service last night. Though we were all apart and all over the country, I felt very much like we were all in the same room as family and friends shared memory after memory of Sue. We feel so blessed to have had the pleasure of sharing many holiday meals at our home with Sue. May you all find peace as you go through this difficult time.
Love and blessings to all the family,

The Shiva service for Nana was absolutely beautiful. It was so wonderful for me, Kirby, Paige and Brayden to see all the faces of family and friends who so dearly loved our beloved Nana. Sue Spielman was truly one of a kind and the most wonderful grand and great grandmother anyone could hope for. She was fun, patient, generous, smart, kind, thoughtful and the list goes on and on. We feel so blessed to have been a part of her life for almost 40 years.

She was Sue Stern when I knew her as my good friend Andy's mom growing up as friends in West Orange, NJ.
I remember a sleep over at Andy's when I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. For some reason, I got sick that night
and had to let her know. She said let's go to the kitchen. She said Coke was good for an upset stomach and it worked.
Amazing. Who knew?
Sue was always kind and generous and we reconnected later in life, after she married Milt (also a family friend.)
when I moved back to Montclair, N.J. and even worked with Andy for a while. Sue was an amazing woman
and lives in the hearts of her family & friends. Her memory is a blessing.

Sue has always been so kind to me. She always took an interest in my life and in what I was doing. Sue not only supported the relationship my sister and I have with our 'big bros', she really understood how important her sons are to us and encouraged our connection. When our father was dying I called the house where my brothers were on a family vacation to tell them it looked like our father's time was running out. Sue answered the phone. Hearing her voice, I started crying as I tried to get the words out. She said "Oh sweetheart, I am so sorry. What can I do? How can I help?" Grace and generosity of heart personified. Her care and love were genuine and truthfully remarkable. Sue was kind and welcoming to my husband and sons as well. She lovingly looked at all my wedding photos and was there when our first son was a week old telling me he was the most beautiful baby she had ever seen. When I saw her last we talked about the joys and challenges of being a 'boy mom." Her sons were so important to her and she lit up every time she was with them or in talking about them. I will miss her and am grateful I knew her and for all the love and light she gave to the world.

My dad, brother and I were very moved by the shiva service. I remember one time when I met Sue, all the adults were having an "adult conversation" and I was not allowed to be in the room. I remember Sue came up to me and we started talking about dogs. She was a person who really wanted to get to know you and I could tell she really liked connecting with new people. I am very sorry about her passing. Love, Matan

I had the honor of meeting “Tom’s Mum” just one time...she made a lasting impression and left a smile in my heart. Tom is a wonderful, gentle soul and a gift on my journey. Tom and Ann are a very special couple to my husband Charles and I. They have help light our path with their light....
It’s always so special when a friend asks me to meet their Mum. It’s a sign of true closeness and a desire to share and be known. My own Mum is three thousand miles away in Ireland and I miss her smile and her hugs.
I just knew Toms Mum would be a hugger and she was...
Such was her warmth when we met, her charm and personality so genuine, that when she looked at me and said “ Tell me Dear, how did you and Charles meet?” , I was moved to share the full, rather long, complicated story. You see, we had an interesting beginning and we met late in life, almost missing each other in time and geography. I usually give new acquaintances the short polite version… but with Toms Mum I gave her the full unvarnished saga feeling like she would get it, that we would make a special connection. We did – she looked deep into my eyes nodding keenly, smiling in all the right places and cocking her head at the quirky bits. She heard me. She said it was a Wonderful Story. It is a Wonderful Story. We sat side by side for a bit watching Axel and our dogs check each other out, enjoying the sun and the wonderful company.
My own short term memory being what it is I had completely forgotten that Tom had mentioned that his Mum, though happy and vibrant, had a bit of a challenge with her short term memory.
So, when she turned to me smiling and looked into my eyes - I expected a follow up question, or something relating to Life and Love and the wonder of chance encounters. I sat up, smiling, expectant.
“Tell me Dear“ she said “How did you and Charles meet ?“
We may only have met once...but Toms Mum has blessed me with another Wonderful Story to tell....
With Love,
Angela

It was an honor to participate in the heartfelt Shiva for Sue as I supported my beloved friends, Ken and Linda. It was my first Zoom celebration and I was so proud of all who managed the administration. Although it was the best option given our current circumstances of social distancing, I sure missed the hugs afterward. I've been smiling all day thinking of all that was shared about her wonderful life!

Tribute to Mom
(April 11, 2020)
It is a very sad time when one’s Mother passes away at the age of 55. But it must be much worse for the spouse of the departed. In the hearse on the way home from the grave site ceremony, my Father stated rather unequivocally that he was going to marry again. He just didn’t know to whom! Everyone in the hearse silently applauded. That was in November, 1978.
Dad married Mom in June, 1980. He started to pursue Mom sometime after seeing her out on a date with “Shrimpy” Herman. Well, if she can go out with him, he thought, she can go out with me. And he was right! “Shrimpy” Herman was left in the dust.
Sometime since Dad passed away, I was told that the Jewish society of West and South Orange was ecstatic when Dad and Mom got married.
All of the preceding is to set the stage for my tribute to Mom. Given that my Mother passed away, Mom was the best thing that could have happened to my Father. It was her presence that helped him to live past the age of 90. And she helped Karen and me manage Dad during certain difficult situations. She was the only Spielman Grandmother and Great Grandmother that my children and children ever knew. And she was another Mother for both of my sisters, Karen and me.
Mom was a lovely, caring person who, thankfully, entered my life and shall never leave it.
With a great deal of love,
Bob Spielman

Ken, if a Shiva service can be warm and inspiring this was on for the ages. I am only sorry I never had the opportunity to meet your Mom and experience the “force of Sue Spielman”. She reminded me of a number of women of her generation who had the grace and tenacity to raise a family and make an impact on their community. My heartfelt condolences to you, Linda and the rest of your wonderful family. Love John

Dear Andy, Ken and Tom,
Among the many warm memories I have of your mom from my teenage years and beyond, what stands out the most is how she made me feel: valued and loved. I see her now, curled up on the couch, knees flexed and feet tucked under her thighs - not in a power pose - but in a pose that said “Welcome, sit a spell, you are important to me and I want to hear all about your life and how you’re doing.” In her kindness, warmth, and work ethic she was and remains a role model and inspiration to me so many years later.
It is with sadness and love that I send my deepest sympathies to all of you.
