On a whim I googled my dear piano teacher Dr. Nellie Vertenstein and was so saddened to hear of her recent passing.
Dr. Vertenstein was my first piano teacher in the early 80's when I was 7 years old. I studied with her for 8 years.
Dr. Vertenstein's passion ignited my love of music which remains a mainstay of my life to this day. Her delight in composers and their works introduced me to an entire world where I would learn to feel quite at home. Her joy in her students and their progress inspired me to work harder and harder. I will never forget her Sunday morning master classes, her yearly recitals at Phipps Mansion where she took such pride in all of us and our accomplishments.
I spoke to Dr. Vertenstein about 15 years ago on my last visit to Denver and when she heard who was on the phone her first question was "Are you still playing? Good! This is what you must play" and she proceeded to give me a list of several pieces to work on.
Dr. Vertenstein's impact will live on in all of us who cherish and love the piano because of what we learned from her hands and her heart.
May her memory be for a blessing.

Condolences to Mariana and other family members. My musical and intellectual life was very much influenced by Dr. Vertenstein. From the years she taught me in high school and through my music degrees, we kept in regular contact. She attended my recitals even years after I started college. Her coaching sessions when I was preparing for concerts and recording sessions were memorable and unmatched. Some of my fondest memories are associated with her work toward her DMA in Piano Performance. She played her solo and chamber music recitals for me (and asked me to turn pages for one of her violin/piano concerts -- I was in awe that she asked me!) were very memorable, as was the time she asked me to give HER comments on her playing a Mozart concerto in Boulder (one of her degree requirements). Everything she did turned into a teaching moment -- what a mentor she was! She was a well-rounded humanist who encouraged us all to lead balanced lives. I will always remember her high standards, elegance, and kindness.

Dear Mariana, Steve, and family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. Dr. Vertenstein lessons are still with me even three decades later, and I am so grateful to be among the countless students whose lives she has impacted profoundly. I also remember fondly my brief time with you in 1990 when I spent a semester in Boulder. I wish you peace during this sad time.
With love,
Marnie Engel

To The Family of Dr. Vertenstein,
We loved your mother and grandmother and had immense respect for her. She a survivor, lover & teacher of music and quite a character. She made us laugh and sometimes, made us angry. Regardless, she made a massive impact on us and made a positive difference.
I/We are so glad she was part of our lives. I/We will not forget her and we are honored we knew her.
Sincerely,
Elle and Remy Guillot and Ali Theriault and Ron Guillot

Dear Mariana,
I am so sorry for your loss. I remember you well from my lessons with your mother many years ago when we were both preteens. Her and I remained very friendly through the years at Conferences and Concerts. I would always ask about you.
Hope you are well.
Best,

When we helped settle a Russian family in the early 1990’s, all the family wanted was a piano teacher for their 12 year old daughter. Dr. Vertenstein took on Regina at no cost. May her memory be for blessing. Ruth Malman
