"Major Osur" was my Academic Advisor at the Air Force Academy. Without him, I probably would not have graduated! He was a strong, positive influence - and a lot of fun too! Belated thanks to Al and his family for all he and they gave to make the world a better place. Rick Pfautz

Alan changed my life in profound ways, and he always told the truth. I discovered rugby at a time when I needed community and family more than ever. I will forever be in Alan's debt for creating a home for me--and for all of us misfits--at Camp USAFA. Rest in power, dear one.

Alan was a stud! How in the world he kept those women's teams on point is a mystery. They loved him and they poured their guts out for him. It was special to experience. He had a knack for connecting with all his players and getting the most out of them. We owe a mountain to this amazing coach and man,

My deepest condolences to Alan's family! I knew Alan for many many years as a fellow rugby coach, coaching with and against Alan during his years with the Academy. Alan was a great influence on me as a coach, person and friend! Alan always brought a positive and enthusiastic love for teaching the game. I remember Alan for his knowledge, support and encouragement over the years! I will always have my memories of him running on the pitch and smiling from ear to ear. His love for teaching the game of rugby was always on full display and a pleasure to be apart of. Alan you will be greatly missed but never forgotten! Thank you for everything you did!!

Alan's influence on rugby at the Academy, the USAF and beyond has been immense, and the effects will be felt for a long time to come.
Although rugby aligned well with General MacArthur's "fields of friendly strife" dictum, Coach had an uphill battle to expand rugby at USAFA beyond intramurals. It required vision, creativity, and persistence. Coach's superiors may have underestimated the determination behind Coach's boyish appearance, enthusiasm and ready smile.
It was all about the game; If the field had no markings Coach would improvise, such as tromping sidelines in more than 6 inches of snow. If the opponents were short a player Al would suit up for the opposition and give no quarter. If a referee didn't show, Coach would take the whistle and rule impartially. If a military hop for the team fell through Al would scramble to make things happen.
Coach never let the team down and his players responded in kind. Al left his cadets with experiences and lessons for a lifetime. Not to mention some memorable post-game songs.

Thanks Coach Osur - if not for your work on behalf of the AF Academy, my life would not be as rich, nor filled with the wonderful memories of USAFA Rugby. You will forever be remembered by this guy as a generous soul who shared his time and made life for so many worth living!

Thanks Alan, for giving this undersized 145 pound lightweight, a chance to play and enjoy rugby (along with the culture and parties). It definitely helped me to survive USAFA. Alan was a kind and calm gentle soul with a winning smile. Thanks again for the many fond memories, COACH.

“Coach” changed the course of my life. He recruited me from intramural rugby in 1968 and trained me to play scrum half for the spring season of the first varsity team. (We beat Cranwell that season!)
His love of the game was infectious and propelled me to live my life around the sport for the next 15 years, to include playing fly half with the Boston RFC, the American University RFC and the Colorado Springs RFC, winning the Montreal 15’s tournament and the Boston 7’s tournament, touring with an All-New England side in England, Ireland, Northern Ireland and France, and finishing out my career as captain of the Denver Barbarians and winning the Western National Championship.
None of this would ever had happened but for Coach’s decision to pluck me from a squadron intramural field during my junior year. Coach taught me that teamwork and mutual respect for each other would always triumph, even in numerical defeat. When we stepped onto the field, Coach taught us, by his personal example of natural compassion for everyone he met, to leave ALL of our differences behind, if we were to have any chance of winning - either the game of rugby, or the game of life.
My outlook on life and my approach to solving problems among and with humans of every background and origin was truly shaped by his demanding, even-handed and always loving example.
Thank you, Coach - and I look forward to our meeting again the next time around.
Merit (fka “Milt”) Bennett (Santa Fe, NM)

Alan was the founder of both men's and women's rugby teams at the US Air Force Academy. Several of his players got together and produced a youtube video of his career, found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bwvz7Vz0QSo
In addition, we have documented more of his rugby history with the team on our historical website: http://usafarugbyalumni.com/index.php?title=1977_-_1980_Alan_Osur
He was an incredible human being and will be missed.
