Growing up, I always looked forward to the next visit to Grandma Andy’s house just a few blocks away. I knew I had a day of full of crafts, baking, writing (and sometimes a Dairy Queen blizzard if I was lucky) to look forward to. I came over and would go straight downstairs, spending hours in her basement craft room creating all types of art projects. I always discovered something new with her many drawers of materials. During these visits she spent so much quality time with me, making sure I was able to express myself in whichever way I pleased that day. One of my favorite art projects with her was painting my bedroom nook upstairs. Together we spent the day turning the blank slate into a blue and pink sky that became my own peaceful spot to enjoy every time I slept over.
One of the most meaningful ways she impacted me was helping me cultivate my interest in writing. In my youngest years she helped me craft short books based on my imaginary stories which she kept and encouraged me to share with my younger cousins when they reached the same age. She even hung up and framed a 10 page letter I wrote to Pearl and Jerry that could have very well been recycled. I felt like the best writer in the world at age 8! Even in high school when I visited less often, she continued to show an unwavering interest in my writing projects. No matter what it was about, I remember her face lighting up with joy when I would show her something new. She would say, “Wow, this is really great Samantha,” or a simple, “You did great, kid.”
Its clear that Grandma was a strong believer in writing as a medium to pass down family tradition and memories - this was her true passion and how I will always remember her. Her unmatched storytelling abilities and witty spirit is what made her presence and home so warm and comforting. I’m so grateful to have spent so many years with her traveling, writing and creating things!

Andy's friendship was one of the best things to happen to me as a fellow travel writer. We commiserated over working with nasty editors, overly competitive colleagues and lousy pay, but also enjoyed our mutual.loce of new places and new experiences. Andy was also a dear friend, inviting our entire family for holiday dinners and even making a little engagement party for my husband and me, replete with charming table decorations. Sweet, so very funny and witty, I always loved visiting Andy and her wonderful.husband at their beautiful artistic home. True friends, true Menachem. Andy, you are missed!!

Andy loved being a grandmother. I remember she liked to set up parties just for the fun of baking a cake and letting Samantha and Jeremy decorate it. She enjoyed setting the table and having them make name cards, and helping the kids create invitations to the party. It didn't matter what the occasion was-- any day was fine for a party! Andy also loved creating projects with them that nourished their artistic interests. She would type Samantha's stories into a "book" and help her feel like a real author. She gave Jeremy all the drawing paper he could imagine to encourage his love of drawing and admired his work. She had a craft area in her basement that was a young artist's dream. I know my kids were lucky to grow up with Grandma Andy right down the street. We will miss her very much.
