I got to know Jay and Kathe on several VOSH trips: Volunteer Optometrist in Service to Humanity. Jay was always so very funny in every situation. He could diffuse tension of things not going smoothly with his calm and quick witted demeanor and charm. I always enjoyed being around Jay and I would have hoped for him to have a much longer time in retirement than he did. God bless you friend and to Kathe and family my sincerest condolences upon this loss. Recent foot surgery prevented me from attending services but you are all in my heart.

Brother Bernard said it well. I too find myself reminiscing about all the fun times - and with Jay - most times became fun times.
TO JAY
My apologies for not being there but the gods of dialysis have me stuck in Ottawa.
Fifty years ago, as young, vibrant students, we never would have guessed that we were forging a life-long friendship.
When I was little, I used to beg my parents for a brother, but they were done with me. So, later on, I gained two brothers. First Bernard and then Jay.
From the first, Jay was relentless in teasing me. Lots and lots and lots of “short” jokes. Lots of Chinese food. And hundreds of hours studying and talking about our plans.
As we moved on, we stayed in touch - often with as Bernard as inter mediator, - but Jay was always there. Despite the distances and the years — as we moved on to create our families and careers, — every time we picked up just as we left off.
Jay: Smart, compassionate, overly generous, always funny and giver of the best hugs. There is a hole in my universe that can never be filled by his passing.
Somewhere, in the midst of some forgotten silliness, Jay and I took on nicknames based on the old children’s western, The Cisco Kid.
Cisco was taller, slender and clever. Pancho, his side kick, was short, chubby and a foil for Cisco’s jokes. I will leave it to you to guess who was who in this duo. So to Cisco I say:
A Cisco
Mi querida, leal,
Generoso, inteligente,
Y amigo mui divertido
Siempre estares conmingo,
Con todo mi corizon deseo
Espero
“! VE CON DIOS!”
Tu amigo Para siempre
Pancho
Translation of my horrible Spanish:
“To Cisco,
My dear, loyal, generous, intelligent,
My very funny friend,
You will always be with me
I wish
“Go with God!”
Your friend always,
Pancho

We are very sad to hear of Jay's passing. We were fortunate to know him and always found him to be kind and upbeat. Jay was a friend and fellow eyecare professional who accompanied us on volunteer eyecare mission trips to Mexico. Ski trips, guitar jam sessions and times with Jay and Kathe in his home are lasting memories. Our deepest condolences to Kathe and family. Dr. Joseph and Diane Lavaux

Dear Jay,
There’s a huge empty space in my world since you left us. I often find myself staring blankly into that void, and then magically, great memories of our 57 years of friendship bubble up. As they do, I chuckle and even laugh out loud just as we always did during our times together. In those brief moments, that huge empty space seems a little smaller.
I went skiing last Friday, taking one last run to honor you and our times together on the slopes. It was unseasonably cold, gray and windy that day, nature’s reflection of my own heavy spirit. I stopped at my favorite spot to thank you for introducing me to your skiing world, for all our good times together and to say goodbye one more time. Suddenly, the clouds parted and the sun shone brilliantly over the whole mountain. It warmed me to the core—you know that special feeling. In that moment I knew you were right there with me, and that you will be always.
Until we meet again, my dear old “Brother Greenstein”, Rest In Peace.
“Brother Bernard”
PS You’ll be happy to know that I made my goal of 50. You made it become 51!

Dr. Greenstein was my husband's and my eye doctor for over thirty years.
He was so kind and I had great conversations with him on so many different things.
My husband always admired Dr. Jay's ties, he had some jazzy ones.
God speed Dr. Jay.

The world is a lesser place without Jay Greenstein in it. Jay was my friend and eye doctor for over 40 years and back in the day, my frisbee partrner. Among his many achievements, he threw great Halloween parties.
A kind and generous soul who belonged to the universe. I'm positive he earned his wings many times.
Safe travels, my friend. I'll miss our visits.

Jay was my friend and also I might add my eye doctor. I guess this was in the late 70s very early 80s. I also gave Jay guitar lessons for a couple years and he was indeed an avid pupil. Passionate about the guitar and all of its treasures. Jay was a good friend. Kind and caring he was a good man. When I moved from Denver he was perhaps the one I missed most. Knowing he is not here anymore leaves me with a hole in my Life. I will always miss his good humour and comradeship. Smooth sailing buddy, we will meet again.

It was very sad to hear of Jay's passing today. I have known Jay for many years both as a friend and as a colleague. I remember many years ago, my partner, Barbara, and I sat down at a table where Kathe and Jay and some other ODs and their wives were sitting at a big annual December party hosted by a large Denver surgical practice. From that year onward, we all sat together at the same table for many years, as the parties were an annual event. Jay and I with the ladies would also go out occasionally for dinner. We even went skiing/boarding together. I remember his style was slow and steady, from one side to the other, back and forth down the mountain. One time I called Jay to talk about going out to dinner again, and he and Kathe were at the airport, I believe in Chicago, waiting for their flight to Europe to go on a river trip. We laughed and he said we would have to get together after they returned. Then, COVID hit, and everything got put on hold. Last year, we had made plans to go out for dinner, but when I emailed him the day before to confirm our plans, he answered back quickly that he had been just diagnosed with a very serious illness and would not be able to go out for some time. I wished him well and talked with Kathe to check on him several times. Jay was a very fine gentleman and professional optometrist. I will truly miss him very much, and my sincerest condolences go out to Kathe and the family.

Dr. Jay had been my eye doctor since moving to Colorado in 2004. He also knew my eye doctor back East. I loved our conversations. He will be greatly missed.

I've known and been friends with Jay for almost all of my 46+ years in Denver. I met him as "my new optometrist," but, quite quickly, he became a dear friend. Jay was such a pleasure to share time and stories with. He was smart, insightful, very witty; but also the knowledgeable professional expert I needed and appreciated for my weird eyes. I cherished and trusted his advice. I don't think Jay had an angry bone in his body or thought in his mind. I surely never saw him even peeved, even when, as his insurance broker, I delivered the bad news of a premium increase. I'm a skier and mountain sports person, like Jay, and I enjoyed our swapping of stories about the wonderful white stuff. I regret that our promises of skiing/boarding together never materialized. Bottom line: anyone who knew Jay is a better person because of knowing him. Godspeed, my friend! We miss you! Love and hugs to Kathe and his family.

I’m very sad to hear of Jay’s passing. It was my great good fortune to have him as my boss for 20 years, and I had the utmost respect for him. He was a fabulous optometrist and taught me so much. I appreciated his sense of humor and we laughed about something almost everyday when we worked together. The world is less without him. I offer my condolences, Kathe, and to the whole of your family and friends.
Shalom,
