Jeannie Kaplan was a force of nature and it was one of the joys of my life to be included in her world. I don't remember how I met her. I knew Steve first, and then somehow I started almost living at 818 Marion, becoming the woman who stayed for dinner two or three nights a week for several years. I always felt welcomed, (at least by Brandeis,) and had the honor of babysititng him when Leslie was born. Jeanne was the world's best and most enthusiastic mother, and I learned so much from her. And what a household she ran: Leslie and Michael, and then her wonderful parents Sophie and Morris coming for long visits. And Steve, whom she adored, and teased, and who reveled in the chaos, but pretended not to.
So many at the services today remembered the political, passionate fighter. I knew that woman, but the one I loved was the one who saw the lonely young woman I was, invited me in, and made me a "chosen sister". We sat around in our nightgowns, and ate way too many brownie sundaes while kids and dogs played at our feet. I loved her so very much and will never forget her.
